Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 5:14
From the Musnad of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam (RA)
من مسند الزبير بن العوام
Hadith 5:14
Muhammad ibn Isma'il ibn 'Ali al-Ansari narrated to us, Khalaf ibn Tamim al-Massisi narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Jabbar ibn 'Umar al-Ayli, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Ata' ibn Ibrahim, from his grandmother, Umm 'Ata', the freedwoman of al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam, who said: I heard al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam saying: When "And warn your closest kindred" (al-Shu'ara': 214) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) shouted from atop Abu Qubays, "O family of 'Abd Manaf, I am a warner." So Quraysh came to him, and he warned them and cautioned them. They said: "You claim that you are a prophet to whom revelation is sent, and that for Solomon the wind and the mountains were subjected, and for Moses the sea was subjected, and that Jesus used to bring the dead to life. So call upon Allah to move these mountains away from us, and to cause rivers to gush forth for us from the earth so that we may make them into fields, and we may plant and eat. Otherwise, call upon Allah to bring our dead back to life for us so that we may speak to them and they may speak to us. Otherwise, call upon Allah to turn this rock that is beneath you into gold, so that we may carve from it, and it will suffice us from the journey of winter and summer, for you claim that you are like them." While we were around him, the revelation descended upon him. When it was lifted from him, he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, He has granted me what you asked for, and if I had wished, it would have been. But He gave me the choice between you entering through the gate of mercy, so that your believers may believe, or that He leaves you to what you chose for yourselves, so you would stray from the gate of mercy and your believers would not believe. So I chose the gate of mercy, so that your believers may believe. And He informed me that if He gave you that and then you disbelieved, He would punish you with a punishment that He does not inflict upon anyone among the worlds." Then was revealed: "And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them" (al-Isra': 59), until he read three verses. And was revealed: "And if there were a Qur'an by which mountains could be moved, or the earth could be cleaved asunder, or the dead could be made to speak..." (al-Ra'd: 31) until the end of the verse.
