مسند علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه

Hadith 3:106

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, [who said]: Hakim ibn Hakim ibn 'Abbad ibn Hunayf narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Zuhri, from 'Ali ibn al-Husayn, from his father, from his grandfather 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) entered upon me and Fatimah at night, so he woke us up for prayer. He said: Then he returned to his house and prayed for a while during the night, and we did not hear a sound from him. He said: Then he returned to us and woke us up, and said: "Arise and pray." I sat up while I was rubbing my eyes, and I was saying: "By Allah, we do not pray except what Allah has written for us. Our souls are in the hand of Allah; if He wills to awaken us, He will awaken us." He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) turned away while he was saying—and striking his thigh—: "We do not pray except what is written for us, we do not pray except what Allah has written for us." He said it twice, "And man is ever, in most things, contentious" (Al-Kahf: 54).
