Hadith 3:136

Ishaq ibn Isma'il al-Taliqani narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Fudayl ibn Ghazwan narrated to us, from Husayn ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from Sa'd ibn Ubaydah, from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, who said: I heard Ali saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent me, al-Zubayr, and Abu Marthad al-Sulami—and all of us were horsemen—and he said: "Go until you reach Rawdat Khakh, for there is a woman there with a letter from Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah to the polytheists, so bring it to me." We caught up with her while she was leaning on her camel at the place where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told us. I said: "Where is the letter that is with you?" She said: "There is no letter with me." We made her camel kneel and searched her baggage. My companion said: "We do not see anything with her." I said: "We know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not lie. By the One by whom we swear, you will either bring it out, or I will strip you [of your clothes]," meaning the sword. When she saw the seriousness, she reached toward her waist-wrapper—and she was wearing a wool garment—and brought out the letter. We brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Hatib, what caused you to do what you did?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, there is nothing with me except that I am a believer in Allah and His Messenger, but I wanted to have a favor with the people by which Allah would protect my family and my wealth. There was no one among your companions except that he had someone among his people there by whom Allah would protect his family and his wealth." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He has spoken the truth, so do not say anything to him but good." Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, he has betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, so let me strike his neck." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Is he not of the people of Badr? And what do you know, O Umar, perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: 'Do what you wish, for Paradise has been guaranteed for you.'"
