Musnad Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA)

Hadith 3:139

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Sharik narrated to us, from al-A’mash, from al-Minhal, from ‘Abbad ibn ‘Abd Allah—or ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbad—from ‘Ali, who said: He ascended the pulpit on a Friday and delivered a sermon. Then al-Ash’ath stood up to him and said, "This Humayra’ (reddish-white woman) has overcome us regarding you." He (Ali) said, "Who will excuse me from these arrogant, corpulent men? One of them stays behind, rolling about on his cushions, while these people hasten to the remembrance of Allah. If I were to drive them away, I would indeed be among the wrongdoers." "By Allah, I have heard him (the Prophet) say: 'They will surely strike you for the sake of the religion, returning to it, just as you struck them for it in the beginning.'"
