Abu al-Rabi’ al-Zahrani narrated to us, ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn al-Mukhtar al-Ansari narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Fayruz, Hudayn ibn al-Mundhir al-Raqashi narrated to me, he said: I witnessed ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan when al-Walid ibn ‘Uqbah was brought to him. He had led the people of Kufa in the morning prayer as four [rak’ahs], then he said, “Shall I increase you?” Humran and another man testified against him. One of them testified that he saw him drinking it—meaning wine—and the other testified that he saw him vomiting it. ‘Uthman said, “He would not have vomited it unless he had drunk it.” He said to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, “Carry out the prescribed punishment upon him.” ‘Ali said to his son, al-Hasan, “Carry out the prescribed punishment upon him.” Al-Hasan said, “Let the one who took charge of its heat take charge of its cold.” So he said to ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja’far, the son of his brother, “Carry out the prescribed punishment upon him.” He took a whip and flogged him, while ‘Ali counted. When he reached forty, he said, “Stop. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) flogged forty, Abu Bakr flogged forty, and ‘Umar flogged eighty. All of them are Sunnah, and this one is more beloved to me.”
