Hadith 3:285

Abu Musa narrated to us, Wahb bin Jarir narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from al-A’mash, from ‘Amr bin Murrah, from Abu al-Bakhtari, from ‘Ali, who said: ‘Umar bin al-Khattab said: "What do you see regarding the surplus that we have from this wealth?" The people said: "O Commander of the Faithful, we have kept you busy from your family, your estate, and your trade, so it is yours." He said to me: "What do you say?" I said: "They have advised you." He said: "Speak." I said: "Do not make your certainty a conjecture, and your knowledge ignorance." He said: "You shall surely provide evidence for what you said, or I shall surely punish you." I said: "Yes, by Allah, I shall surely provide evidence for it. Do you not remember when the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent you as a collector, and you came to al-‘Abbas bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib, and he withheld his charity from you? You said to me: 'Come with me to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, so we may inform him of what al-‘Abbas did.' So we went to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and we found him troubled, so we returned. Then we returned to him the next day and found him in good spirits. I informed him of what al-‘Abbas had done, and he said: 'Do you not know that a man’s paternal uncle is like his own father?' We mentioned to him what we had seen of his troubled state on the first day and what we had seen of his good spirits on the second day. He said: 'You came to me on the first day while there remained with me a dinar from the charity, and that which you saw was because of that. And you came to me today, and I have already distributed it, and that is what you saw of my good spirits.'" ‘Umar said: "You have spoken the truth. By Allah, I shall surely thank you—meaning for the first and the last." I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, why then did you hasten the punishment and delay the thanks?"
