Zuhayr narrated to us, Yunus ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Salih ibn Umar narrated to us, Asim ibn Kulayb narrated to us, from Abu Burdah ibn Abi Musa, who said: I was sitting with my father when Ali ibn Abi Talib came to us regarding a matter of the people’s affairs. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Say: O Allah, guide me and direct me." And remember by 'guidance' your guidance to the path, and remember by 'direction' the directing of the arrow by the index finger. He forbade me from placing my ring on this—and Abu Burdah gestured with his thumb toward the index finger or the middle finger. Asim said: It became confused for me which of the two it was. He said: And Ali said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the *maytharah* (silk saddlecloth) and the *qasiyyah* (garment). As for the *maytharah*, it is something the women used to make for their husbands, placing it upon their saddles. As for the *qasiyyah*, it is a garment from Ash-Sham—it was said: Ash-Sham or Egypt—striped, containing silk, and having patterns like citrons. Abu Burdah said: When we saw the *sabani* (a type of garment), we knew that it was the one.
