Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 3:93

Musnad Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA)

Hadith 3:93

'Ubayd Allah narrated to us, Hammad bin Mas'adah narrated to us, from al-Mundhir bin Tha'labah, from 'Ilba' bin Ahmar, who said: 'Ali bin Abi Talib said: "I proposed to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, for his daughter Fatimah." He said: "So 'Ali sold a coat of mail of his, and some of what he sold of his belongings, and it reached four hundred and eighty dirhams." He said: "And the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered that two-thirds of it be spent on perfume, and one-third on clothing. And he spat into a jar of water, then ordered them to wash with it." He said: "And he ordered her not to precede him in breastfeeding her child." He said: "But she preceded him in breastfeeding al-Husayn. As for al-Hasan, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did something in his mouth—we do not know what it was—so he was the more knowledgeable of the two men."
