Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 152:119

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, Jarir narrated to us, from al-A’mash, from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, from Abu ‘Ubaydah, who said: ‘Abdullah said: When the day of Badr arrived, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "What do you see regarding these captives?" ‘Abdullah ibn Rawahah said: "O Messenger of Allah, you are in a valley with much firewood, so set the valley on fire upon them, then cast them into it." Al-‘Abbas said: "May Allah sever your kinship." ‘Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, the leaders of the polytheists and their chiefs—they called you a liar and fought you; strike their necks." Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, your kin and your people; spare them, perhaps Allah will save them from the Fire through you." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered to relieve himself. A group said: "The opinion is what ‘Umar said," and a group said: "The opinion is what Abu Bakr said." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out and said: "What is your opinion regarding these two men? Their likeness is like their brothers who were before them. Nuh said: 'My Lord, do not leave upon the earth any inhabitant among the disbelievers. Indeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants.' And Musa said: 'Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment.' And Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: 'So whoever follows me, then he is of me; and whoever disobeys me—indeed, You are Forgiving, Merciful.' And ‘Isa said: 'If You should punish them—indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them—indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.' But you are a people who are in need, so let none of you return except by a ransom or by a strike to the neck." ‘Abdullah said: I said: "Except Suhayl ibn Bayda’, for he should not be killed, as I heard him speaking of Islam." He remained silent. No day was more fearful to me—that stones might fall upon me from the sky—than that day, until the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Except Suhayl ibn Bayda’."
