Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 152:169

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, Ismail bin Ibrahim narrated to us, from Dawud, from al-Sha’bi, from Alqama, who said: I said to Ibn Mas’ud, "Did any of you accompany the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the night of the Jinn?" He said: "None of us accompanied him, but we missed him one night in Makkah. We said, 'He has been assassinated' or 'He has been snatched away.' We spent the worst night any people have ever spent. When it was the time before dawn—or he said, the morning—we were with him coming from the direction of Hira. We said, 'O Messenger of Allah,' and we mentioned to him what we had been in. He said, 'The caller of the Jinn came to me, so I went and recited to them.' Then he went and showed us their traces and the traces of their fires."
