Hadith 152:271
Al-Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us, Shayban narrated to us, from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, from ‘Imran ibn Husayn, from Ibn Mas‘ud, who said: We were talking one night in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) until we talked a great deal, then we returned to our families. When we went to the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) the next morning, he said: "The prophets were presented to me tonight with their nations and their followers from their nations. A prophet would pass by with three people from his nation, and a prophet would pass by with a group from his nation, and a prophet would pass by with a small number, and a prophet would pass by with one man from his nation, and a prophet would pass by with no one from his people with him. Allah has informed you about Lot, and He said: 'Is there not among you a man of right conduct?'" He said: "Then Moses came to me with a large gathering of the Children of Israel. When I saw them, they impressed me. I said: 'Who are these?' He said: 'This is your brother, Moses, son of ‘Imran, and those who followed him from the Children of Israel.' I said: 'My Lord, where is my nation?' He said: 'Look to your right.' And behold, the hills—the hills of Makkah—were blocked by the faces of men. I said: 'My Lord, who are these?' He said: 'These are your nation.' He said to me: 'Are you pleased?' I said: 'My Lord, I am pleased.' He said: 'It was said to me: Look to your left.' And behold, the horizon was blocked by men. He said: 'With these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without any reckoning upon them.'" ‘Ukkashah ibn Mihsan, brother of Banu Asad ibn Khuzaymah, stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, pray to your Lord to make me one of them." He said: "O Allah, make him one of them." Another man stood up and said [the same], and the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said: "'Ukkashah has beaten you to it." He said: "Then he said on that day: 'I hope that those who follow me from my nation will be a quarter of the people of Paradise.' We said: 'Allahu Akbar.' Then he said: 'I hope you will be a third.' We said: 'Allahu Akbar.' Then he said: 'I hope you will be half.' Then he recited: 'A multitude from the former [generations] and a multitude from the latter [generations].'" It was mentioned to us that some of the believers discussed among themselves, saying: "What do you think? Do you think the deeds of these seventy [thousand] who enter Paradise without reckoning are such that they were people born into Islam and remained upon it until they died?" He said: "This reached the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), so he said: 'It is not like that. Rather, they are those who do not seek cauterization, do not seek Ruqyah (incantations), do not practice augury (superstition), and they rely upon their Lord.'" He said: "The Prophet (ﷺ) said on that day: 'If you are able—may my father and mother be sacrificed for you—to be among the seventy, then be among the seventy. If you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the hills. If you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw among them many people bustling about.'"
