Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 152:50

Muhammad narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Ibrahim al-Hajari, from Abu al-Ahwas—Abu Ya'la said: I think it is from Ibn Mas'ud—from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said: "The indigent (miskin) is not the one who goes around among you, whom a morsel or two, or a date or two, turns away." We said: "Then what is the indigent, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "The one who does not find what suffices him, and is too shy to ask people, and is not noticed so that charity might be given to him."
