Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 152:65

Continuation of the Musnad of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA)

Hadith 152:65

On the authority of Abdullah, who said: When the day of Hunayn arrived, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed preference in the distribution of the spoils. He gave Al-Aqra’ ibn Habis one hundred camels, and he gave Uyaynah the same, and he gave some of the nobles of the Arabs, showing them preference in the distribution. A man said, "By Allah, this is a distribution in which justice was not observed, and the Face of Allah was not intended by it." I said, "By Allah, I will surely inform the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." So I came to him and informed him of what the man had said. His face changed until it was like the color of the *sarf* (dyed leather). Then he said, "Who will act justly if the Messenger of Allah does not act justly?" Then he said, "May Allah have mercy on Moses; he was harmed with more than this, yet he remained patient." I said, "Indeed, I will never again raise anything to him after this."
