Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 152:87

Continuation of the Musnad of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA)

تابع مسند عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه

Hadith 152:87

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, Jarir narrated to us, from Yahya al-Jabir, from Abu Majida, from Abdullah, that he began to narrate, saying: "The first man to be amputated among the Muslims, or in the Muslims, was a man from the Ansar. He was brought to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and it was said: 'He stole.' He said: 'Take your companion and amputate him.' It was as if ashes had been thrown upon the face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Some of those sitting with him said to him: 'It is as if this has distressed you, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'And why should you not be helpers to the Shaytan, or to Iblis? It is not appropriate for a ruler of an affair that a prescribed punishment (hadd) be brought to him, except that he establishes it. And Allah is Pardoning and loves pardon.' Then he recited this verse: '...and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you?' (An-Nur: 22)."
