Hadith 154:124

Suwayd ibn Sa'id narrated to us, al-Walid ibn Muhammad al-Muqiri narrated to us, from Thawr ibn Yazid, from Abu Haram, from Ibn 'Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) encouraged [the people] toward Jihad one day, and they gathered around him until they crowded him. In the hand of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was a palm branch from which the thorns had been removed, but one thorn remained which had not been noticed. He said, "Move back from me like this, for you have crowded me." The Prophet (ﷺ) struck the stomach of a man, causing the man to bleed. The man went out saying, "This is the action of your Prophet, so how will it be with the people?" 'Umar heard him and said, "Go to the Prophet (ﷺ); if he struck you, he will surely give you justice from himself, and if you have lied, I will drag you by your turban until you speak the truth." The man said, "Go in peace, for I do not wish to go with you." He said, "I will not leave you." So 'Umar took him until he brought him to the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) and said, "This man claims that you struck him and caused his stomach to bleed. What do you see?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Is it true that I struck you?" The man said, "Yes, O Prophet of Allah." He said, "Did anyone see that?" He said, "There were people from the Muslims here." He said, "O Allah, I bear witness with the testimony of a man who saw that, except that he informed me." Some of the Muslims said, "O Messenger of Allah, you caused him to bleed and you did not intend it." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Take wealth for what I have inflicted upon you and go." The man said, "No." He said, "Then grant it to me." He said, "I will not do so." He said, "Then what do you want?" He said, "I want to take retribution from you, O Prophet of Allah." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes." The man said to him, "Step out from among these people." He stepped out from among them and enabled the man to take the palm branch to take retribution from him. He uncovered his stomach, and 'Umar came to hold the Prophet (ﷺ) from behind, saying, "May we be relieved of you—your sandal tripped and your teeth were broken." When the man drew near to strike the Prophet (ﷺ), he threw down the palm branch and kissed his navel, and said, "O Prophet of Allah, this is what I wanted, so that we may suppress the tyrants after you." 'Umar said, "You are indeed more reliable in deed than I."
