Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 154:185

Shayban narrated to us, Jarir narrated to us, Nafi’ narrated from Ibn ‘Umar, who said: ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab saw ‘Utarid al-Tamimi standing in the market with a garment of silk (sira’), and he was a man who would frequent kings and receive from them. ‘Umar said: “O Messenger of Allah, I saw ‘Utarid standing in the market with a garment of silk. If you were to buy it and wear it for the delegations of the Arabs when they come to you—and I think he said—and wear it on Friday.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him: “Indeed, the one who wears silk in this world is the one who has no share in the Hereafter.” After that, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was brought some garments of silk. He sent a garment to ‘Umar, sent a garment to Usamah, and gave ‘Ali a garment, saying: “Tear it into head coverings (khumur) for your women.” ‘Umar came with his garment and said: “O Messenger of Allah, you sent this to me, yet you said yesterday regarding the garment of ‘Utarid what you said?” He replied: “I did not send it to you for you to wear it, but I sent it to you so that you might benefit from it.” As for Usamah, he went out wearing his garment. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) looked at him with a look by which he knew that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had disapproved of what he had done. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, why are you looking at me? You are the one who sent it to me.” He said: “I did not send it to you for you to wear it, but I sent it to you so that you might tear it into head coverings for your women.”
