Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 161:46

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Waki’ narrated to us, from Sufyan, from ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Umayr, from ‘Abdullah ibn al-Harith, that al-‘Abbas said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Your uncle Abu Talib used to protect you and do [good] for you." He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "He is in a shallow part of the Fire, and were it not for me, he would have been in the lowest depth."
