Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 161:6

Abdullah ibn Abd al-Samad narrated to us, al-Qasim narrated to us, from Hisham, from Zayd ibn Aslam, who said: He used to inform us from Dhakwan, Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created Adam, He wiped his back, and there fell from his back every soul He is to create until the Day of Resurrection. He placed between the eyes of every human among them a glimmer of light. Then He presented them to Adam. He said: 'O my Lord, who are these?' He said: 'These are your descendants.' He saw a man among them whose glimmer between his eyes pleased him. He said: 'O my Lord, who is this?' He said: 'A man from your descendants in the latter nations, called David.' He said: 'O my Lord, how much have You set for his lifespan?' He said: 'Sixty years.' He said: 'Increase him from my lifespan by forty years.' He said: 'If it is written and sealed, it is not changed.' When the lifespan of Adam (peace be upon him) came to an end, the Angel of Death came to him. He said: 'Has forty years not remained of my lifespan?' He said: 'Did you not give them to your son, David?' He denied, so his descendants denied; he forgot, so his descendants forgot; and he erred, so his descendants erred."
