Continuation of the Musnad of Aisha (RA)

Hadith 150:458
Abu Hammam narrated to us, 'Awbad narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn Babnus, who said: I and two other men entered upon Aisha, the Mother of the Believers. One of us said to her, "O Mother of the Believers, what do you say about the *'arak*?" She said, "And what is the *'arak*? Is it menstruation?" He said, "Yes." She said, "It is menstruation, just as Allah named it." She said, "It is as if, when that happened, I would wrap myself in my lower garment, and it would be above the lower garment." Then she began to narrate to us. She said, "The Messenger of Allah never passed by my door a single day without saying a word that would gladden my eyes." She said, "So he passed by one day and did not speak to me, and he passed by the next day and did not speak to me." She said, "And he passed by the next day and did not speak to me, and he passed by the next day and did not speak to me. I said, 'Has the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, become angry with me about something?'" She said, "So I bound my head, made my face pale, and threw a pillow in front of the door of the house, and I leaned upon it." She said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, passed by, looked at me, and said, 'What is the matter with you, Aisha?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am ill and have a headache.' He said, 'Rather, I say: Oh, my head!'" She said, "I did not wait but a little while until he was brought to me, being carried in a cloak." She said, "I nursed him, and I have never nursed a sick person, nor have I ever seen a dying person." She said, "He raised his head, so I took it and leaned it against my chest." She said, "Usama bin Zayd entered, and in his hand was a moist *arak* toothstick." She said, "He looked toward it." She said, "I thought he wanted it, so I took it, chewed it with my mouth, and handed it to him." She said, "He took it and brought it toward his mouth." She said, "His hand went limp, and it fell from his hand. Then he turned his face toward me until his mouth was in my mouth. A cold drop dripped from his mouth, from which my skin shivered, and the scent of musk rose in my face. Then his head tilted, and I thought he had fainted." She said, "I took him and laid him on the bed and covered his face." She said, "My father, Abu Bakr, entered and said, 'How do you see him?' I said, 'He has fainted.' He drew near to him, uncovered his face, and said, 'O fainting! This is not a fainting.' Then he uncovered his face and recognized death. He said, 'To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.' Then he wept and said, 'The cessation of revelation and the entry of Gabriel into my house is in the way of Allah.' Then he placed his hands on his temples and placed his mouth on his forehead, and he wept until his tears flowed onto the face of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." "Then he covered his face and went out to the people while he was weeping. He said, 'O assembly of Muslims, does any one of you have a covenant regarding the death of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?' They said, 'No.' Then he turned to Umar and said, 'O Umar, do you have a covenant regarding the death of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'By the One besides Whom there is no god, he has tasted death, and he said to them: "Indeed, I am dying, and indeed, you are dying."' The people wailed and wept intensely." "Then they left him and his family alone. Ali bin Abi Talib and Usama bin Zayd washed him, and he was pouring water over him. Ali said, 'I did not forget anything of him; I did not wash any part except that he turned him for me until I saw someone, and I washed him without seeing anyone, until I finished with him.' Then they shrouded him in a red Yemeni garment and two *ritah* (garments) that had been used. Then they washed [them], then he was laid on the bed. Then they gave permission to the people, and they entered upon him in groups, praying over him without an imam, until no one remained in Medina, free or slave, but prayed over him." "Then they disputed about his burial, where he should be buried. Some of them said, 'By the wood which he used to hold in his hand and under his pulpit.' And some of them said, 'In the Baqi', where he used to bury his dead.' They said, 'We will not do that, for then the slave of one of you or his slave-girl might be angered by his master, and he would seek refuge at his grave, and it would become a tradition.' So their opinion settled on him being buried in his house under his bed where his soul was taken." "When Abu Bakr died, he was buried with him. When death came to Umar bin al-Khattab, he made a will and said, 'When I die, carry me to the door of Aisha's house, and say to her: "This is Umar bin al-Khattab, he greets you with peace and says: May I enter or should I leave?"'" She said, "She remained silent for a while, then said, 'Let him enter and bury him with them.' Abu Bakr was on his right and Umar was on his left." She said, "When Umar was buried, I took the *jilbab* (outer garment) and wrapped myself in it." It was said to her, "What is the matter with you and the *jilbab*?" She said, "This was my husband and this was my father. When Umar was buried, I wrapped myself [in it]."
