Hadith 150:75
Ja'far ibn Mihran narrated to us, 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, al-Zuhri narrated to me, from 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Utbah, from 'A'ishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) returned from al-Baqi' and entered upon me while I was experiencing a headache in my head, and I was saying, "Oh, my head!" He said, "Rather, by Allah, I am the one who says, 'Oh, my head,' O 'A'ishah." Then he said, "What would it harm you if you died before me, so I would attend to you, shroud you, pray over you, and bury you?" She said, "By Allah, it is as if I see you, if you did that, having returned to my house and consummated [the marriage] in it with some of your wives." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) smiled. He said: His pain continued to increase until it became intense while he was in the house of Maymunah. He called his wives and asked them to permit him to be nursed in my house, and they permitted him. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out walking between two men of his family, one of whom was al-Fadl ibn 'Abbas and another man, his feet dragging, his head bandaged, until he came to my house. 'Ubayd Allah said: I narrated this hadith to 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas. He said, "Do you know who the other man was?" I said, "No." He said, "Ali." Then the Messenger of Allah became unconscious, and his pain intensified. Then he recovered and said, "Pour over me seven water skins from various wells, so that I may go out to the people and entrust them." She said: So we sat him in a washbasin belonging to Hafsah bint 'Umar, and we poured water over him until he began to say with his hand, "Enough, enough." Muhammad said: Then he went out, as Ayyub ibn Bashir narrated to me, with his head bandaged, and sat on the pulpit. The first thing he spoke of was that he prayed for the companions of Uhud and prayed for them extensively. Then he said, "Indeed, a servant among the servants of Allah was given a choice by Allah between the world and what is with Allah, so he chose what is with Allah." Abu Bakr understood it and wept, and he knew that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was referring to himself. He said, "Take it easy, O Abu Bakr. Look at these doors that are attached to the mosque, and block them, except for the door of the house of Abu Bakr, for I do not know anyone who was better to me in companionship than him."
