Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 217:11

Continuation of the Hadith of Maymunah (RA), wife of the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 217:11

Ishaq narrated to us, he said: I heard Sufyan in Mina saying: I memorized it from the mouth of al-Zuhri, narrating from Ubayd Allah ibn Abd Allah, from Ibn Abbas, from Maymunah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by a sheep belonging to a freedwoman of hers, which had been given to her from the charity. He said: "Why did they not take its hide, tan it, and benefit from it?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is only a carcass (dead animal)." He said: "Only its consumption is forbidden." Abu Ya'la said: Sufyan excelled with this verse: "Say, 'I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it...'" (Quran 6:145). Sufyan said: "If there were no other verse than this, I would have used it as evidence regarding the corruption of [the prohibition of] eating [the hide]."
