Continuation of the Musnad of Ibn Abbas (RA)
تابع مسند بن عباس
Hadith 111:119
Abu 'Abbad Qatan ibn Nusayr al-Ghubari narrated to us, Ja'far ibn Sulayman narrated to us, Thabit al-Bunani narrated to us, from Abu Rafi', who said: Abu Lu'lu'ah was a slave of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, and he used to make hand-mills. Al-Mughirah used to exact from him a tribute of four dirhams every day. Abu Lu'lu'ah met 'Umar and said, "O Commander of the Faithful, al-Mughirah has made my tribute heavy upon me, so speak to him to lighten it for me." 'Umar said to him, "Fear Allah and be good to your master." It was 'Umar's intention to meet al-Mughirah and speak to him to lighten it. The slave became angry and said, "His justice has encompassed all people except me." So he harbored the intention to kill him. He fashioned a dagger with two heads, sharpened it, and poisoned it. Then he came to al-Hurmuzan and said, "How do you see this?" He said, "I see that you will not strike anyone with this but that you will kill him." Abu Lu'lu'ah waited for his opportunity, and he came at the morning prayer until he stood behind 'Umar. 'Umar used to say, when the prayer was established and he spoke, "Straighten your rows," just as he used to say. When he said the opening takbir, Abu Lu'lu'ah struck him in his shoulder and struck him in his flank. 'Umar fell, and he stabbed thirteen men with his dagger; seven of them perished, and six of them recovered. People began taking 'Umar to his house, and the people cried out until the sun was about to rise. 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf called out, "O people, the prayer, the prayer, the prayer!" They rushed to the prayer, and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf stepped forward and led them in prayer with the two shortest surahs of the Qur'an. When he finished his prayer, they turned toward 'Umar. He called for a drink to see the extent of his wound. He was brought nabidh (a drink made from soaked dates), and he drank it, but it came out of his wound, so it was not known whether it was nabidh or blood. Then he called for milk, and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. They said, "There is no harm upon you, O Commander of the Faithful." He said, "If there is harm in being killed, then I have been killed." People began to praise him, saying, "May Allah reward you with good, O Commander of the Faithful; you were such and such," then they would depart, and other people would come and praise him. 'Umar said, "By Allah, despite what you say, I wish that I could depart from it (this world) evenly—neither for me nor against me—and that the companionship of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had remained intact for me." 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas spoke, and he was at his head, and he was his close associate as if he were from his family, and Ibn 'Abbas used to recite the Qur'an. 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas spoke and said, "By Allah, you will not depart from it evenly. You accompanied the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and you accompanied him in the best way a companion could accompany him. You were for him, and you were for him, and you were for him, until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, passed away while he was pleased with you. Then you accompanied the successor of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, then you took charge of it, O Commander of the Faithful, and you took charge of it in the best way anyone has taken charge of it; you used to do such and such, and you used to do such and such." 'Umar found comfort in the speech of Ibn 'Abbas. 'Umar said, "O Ibn 'Abbas, repeat your speech to me." He repeated it to him. 'Umar said, "By Allah, despite what you say, if I possessed the earth filled with gold, I would ransom myself with it today from the terror of the rising (the Day of Judgment). I have made it a matter of consultation among six: 'Uthman, 'Ali, Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah, al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf, and Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas." He placed 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar with them as an advisor, but not as one of them. He gave them a respite of three days and ordered Suhayb to lead the people in prayer.
