Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 111:56
Continuation of the Musnad of Ibn Abbas (RA)
تابع مسند بن عباس
Hadith 111:56
On the authority of Ibn Abbas regarding the saying of the Almighty, the Majestic: "Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity" (Al-Baqarah). He said: They will be known on the Day of Resurrection by that; they will not be able to stand except as the strangled madman stands. "That is because they said, 'Trade is [just] like interest'" (Al-Baqarah). They lied about Allah, and Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. "So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists..." up to His saying: "...but whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally" (Al-Baqarah). And His saying: "O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger" (Al-Baqarah) to the end of the verse. It reached us—and Allah knows best—that this verse was revealed regarding the Banu ‘Amr ibn ‘Umayr ibn ‘Awf of Thaqif and the Banu al-Mughirah of the Banu Makhzum. The Banu al-Mughirah used to practice usury with Thaqif. When Allah granted His Messenger victory over Makkah, he abolished all usury on that day. The people of Ta’if had made a peace treaty [stipulating] that they would keep their usury, and whatever usury was owed to them was abolished. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wrote at the end of their document that they have what the Muslims have, and upon them is what is upon the Muslims: that they shall not consume usury nor have it consumed for them. Then the Banu ‘Amr ibn ‘Umayr and the Banu al-Mughirah came to ‘Attab ibn Asid, who was over Makkah. The Banu al-Mughirah said, "Why have we been made the most miserable of people regarding usury, while it has been abolished for others besides us?" The Banu ‘Amr ibn ‘Umayr said, "We were granted a peace treaty [stipulating] that we would keep our usury." So ‘Attab ibn Asid wrote to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding that, and this verse was revealed: "And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger." The Banu ‘Amr realized that the declaration of war against them from Allah and His Messenger was [followed] by His saying: "But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged" (Al-Baqarah). You do no wrong by taking more, and you are not wronged by having it diminished. "And if someone is in hardship, then [let there be] postponement until [a time of] ease. But if you give [from your right as] charity, then it is better for you, if only you knew. And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be treated unjustly" (Al-Baqarah). They mentioned that this verse and the last verse of Surat an-Nisa’ were the last [verses] of the Qur’an to be revealed.
