Abu Khaythama narrated to us, Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, Asbagh bin Zayd al-Juhani narrated to us, al-Qasim bin Abi Ayyub narrated to us, Sa'id bin Jubayr narrated to us, from Ibn Abbas regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "And We tried you with a trial" (Ta-Ha). I asked him what the trial was. He said: "Resume the day, O Ibn Jubayr, for it has a long story." When morning came, I went to Ibn Abbas to fulfill what he had promised me regarding the story of the trial. He said: "Pharaoh and his courtiers discussed what Allah had promised Ibrahim: that He would place prophets and kings in his progeny. Some of them said: 'The Children of Israel are indeed awaiting that, having no doubt about it.' They used to think it was Yusuf bin Ya'qub, but when he died, they said: 'It is not so; Allah the Exalted promised Ibrahim.' Pharaoh said: 'How do you see it?' They consulted and agreed to send men with blades to roam among the Children of Israel, and they would not find a male newborn except that they slaughtered him. They did so. When they saw that the elders of the Children of Israel were dying of their natural terms and the young were being slaughtered, they said: 'You are about to annihilate the Children of Israel, and you will end up performing the tasks that they were sparing you from. So, kill every male newborn one year, and their growth will decrease, and leave them one year, and do not kill any of them, so the young will grow up in place of those who die among the elders. They will not become numerous through those you spare, so you will fear their outnumbering you, and they will not be annihilated through those you kill, so you will need that.' They agreed upon that. The mother of Musa became pregnant with Harun in the year in which the boys were not slaughtered, and she gave birth to him openly and safely. When the following year came, she became pregnant with Musa, and worry and sadness fell into her heart. That is from the trial, O Ibn Jubayr, what entered her heart regarding what was intended for him. Allah the Blessed and Exalted revealed to her: 'Do not fear and do not grieve; indeed, We will return him to you and make him one of the messengers' (Al-Qasas). He commanded her that when she gave birth, she should place him in a chest and then cast him into the sea. When she gave birth, she did so. When her son was hidden from her, Satan came to her. She said to herself: 'What have I done to a son? If he had been slaughtered with me, and I had buried and shrouded him, it would have been dearer to me than casting him with my own hands into the waves of the sea and its creatures.' The water carried him until it ended at the landing place of the water-drawers of Pharaoh's wife. When they saw him, they took him, and they intended to open the chest. Some of them said: 'There is wealth in this, and if we open it, the King's wife will not believe us regarding what we found in it.' They carried him in his state, not moving anything from it, until they delivered him to her. When she opened it, she saw a boy in it, and love for him was cast into her, the like of which she had never felt for any human being. The heart of Musa's mother became empty of the remembrance of everything except the remembrance of Musa. When the slaughterers heard of his affair, they came with their blades to Pharaoh's wife to slaughter him—and that is from the trial, O Ibn Jubayr. She said to them: 'Leave him, for this one will not increase the Children of Israel, until I go to Pharaoh and ask him to gift him to me. If he gifts him to me, you will have done well and acted beautifully, and if he commands his slaughter, I will not blame you.' She brought him to Pharaoh and said: 'A comfort of the eye for me and for you.' Pharaoh said: 'He is for you, but as for me, I have no need for that.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'By the One whom I swear by, if Pharaoh had acknowledged him as a comfort of the eye as his wife did, Allah would have guided him through him, just as He guided his wife, but he was deprived of that.' She sent to those around her for every woman who had milk to choose a wet nurse for him. Every time a woman took him to nurse him, he would not accept her breast until Pharaoh's wife feared for him that he would refuse milk and die, and that saddened her. He was taken out to the market and the gathering of people, hoping to find a wet nurse he would accept, but he did not accept. Musa's mother became distraught, and she said to his sister: 'Follow him, trace his tracks and seek him. Do you hear any mention of him? Is my son alive, or have the beasts eaten him?' She forgot what Allah had promised her regarding him. His sister saw him from a distance while they were unaware—and 'the distance' (al-janb) is when a person's gaze reaches something far away while it is beside him, and he is unaware of it. She said out of joy, when the wet nurses had exhausted them: 'Shall I guide you to a household that will care for him for you, and they are sincere to him?' They took her and said: 'What makes you know their sincerity to him? Do you know him?' until they doubted that—and that is from the trial, O Ibn Jubayr. She said: 'Their sincerity to him and their compassion for him is out of desire for the King's in-law and hope for his benefit.' They sent her, and she went to her mother and told her the news. Her mother came, and when she placed him in her lap, he leaped to her breast and sucked it until his sides were full of refreshment. The bearer of good news went to Pharaoh's wife to give her the good news that we have found a wet nurse for your son. She sent for her, and she was brought with him. When she saw what he was doing with her, she said to her: 'Stay with me and nurse this son of mine, for I have never loved anything as I love him.' Musa's mother said: 'I cannot leave my house and my children, for we would be lost. If your soul is willing to give him to me, I will take him to my house, and he will be with me, and I will not spare him any good. Otherwise, I will not leave my house and my children.' Musa's mother remembered what Allah the Exalted had promised her, so she was difficult with Pharaoh's wife, and she was certain that Allah would fulfill His promise. She returned to her house with her son. The people of the village became gathered, refraining from forced labor and injustice, as had been among them. When he grew up, Pharaoh's wife said to Musa's mother: 'I want you to show me my son.' She promised her a day to show him to her. Pharaoh's wife said to her treasurers, stewards, and wet nurses: 'Let none of you remain except that you meet my son today with a gift and honor, so that I may see that in him, and I am sending a trustworthy person to count everything that every person among you does.' Gifts, honors, and offerings continued to meet him from the time he left his mother's house until he was brought to Pharaoh's wife. When he entered upon her, she honored him, treated him well, and rejoiced in him, and he pleased her, and she honored his mother for her good effect on him. Then she said: 'I will bring him to Pharaoh, so he may honor him and treat him well.' When she entered with him to him, she placed him in his lap. Musa reached for Pharaoh's beard and pulled it to the ground. The slanderers, the enemies of Allah, said to Pharaoh: 'Do you not see what Allah promised Ibrahim, His prophet, that he will overcome you, rise above you, and strike you down?' He sent for the slaughterers to slaughter him—and that is from the trial, O Ibn Jubayr, after every affliction he was tested and overcome by, a trial. Pharaoh's wife came running to Pharaoh and said: 'What has happened to you regarding this boy whom you gifted to me?' He said: 'Do you see? He claims that he will strike me down and rise above me.' She said: 'Place between me and you a matter in which you will know the truth. Bring two coals and two pearls, and bring them near to him. If he grabs the two pearls and avoids the two coals, you will know that he has intellect. And if he takes the two coals and does not want the two pearls, you will know that no one prefers the two coals over the two pearls, and he has intellect.' That was brought near, and he took the two coals. They snatched them from his hand for fear that they would burn him. The woman said: 'Do you not see?' Allah turned it away from him after he had intended it, and Allah the Exalted was fulfilling His command regarding him. When he reached his maturity and was among the men, no one from the family of Pharaoh could reach any of the Children of Israel with him present with injustice or forced labor, until they were completely protected. While Musa was in a part of the city, he was with two men fighting, one of them a Pharaohite and the other an Israelite. The Israelite sought his help against the Pharaohite. Musa became intensely angry because he had attacked him, while he knew Musa's status among the Children of Israel and his protection of them—people did not know that this was from nursing, except Musa's mother, unless Allah had let Musa know of that which He did not let others know. Musa struck the Pharaohite and killed him, and no one saw them except Allah and the Israelite. Musa said when he killed the man: 'This is from the work of Satan; indeed, he is a manifest, misleading enemy' (Al-Qasas). Then he said: 'My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me,' and He forgave him; indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. He became in the city fearful, anticipating news. Pharaoh was approached and it was said to him: 'The Children of Israel have killed a man from the family of Pharaoh, so take our right for us and do not be lenient with them.' He said: 'Find me his killer, and who will testify against him? For the King, even if he is with his people, it is not right for him to execute without evidence or proof. Seek for me the knowledge of that, and I will take your right for you.' While they were roaming, finding no proof, Musa saw the next day that same Israelite fighting another man from the family of Pharaoh. The Israelite sought his help against the Pharaohite. Musa happened to have regretted what he had done, so he disliked what he saw of the Israelite's anger, and he wanted to strike the Pharaohite. He said to the Israelite, regarding what he did yesterday and today: 'Indeed, you are a manifest deviant' (Al-Qasas). The Israelite looked at Musa when he said to him what he said, and he was angry like his anger yesterday. He feared that he was the one intended, and not the Pharaohite—and he did not intend him, he only intended the Pharaohite. The Israelite feared and held back the Pharaohite and said: 'O Musa, do you want to kill me as you killed a person yesterday?' (Al-Qasas). He only said that for fear that Musa intended him to kill him. They disputed and obeyed each other, and the Pharaohite went to his people and told them what he heard from the Israelite of the news when he said: 'Do you want to kill me as you killed a person yesterday?' Pharaoh sent the slaughterers to kill Musa. Pharaoh's messengers took the main road, walking in their manner, seeking Musa, and they did not fear that he would escape them. A man from the party of Musa came from the farthest part of the city, taking a short path to get ahead of them to Musa, and he told him the news—and that is from the trial, O Ibn Jubayr. Musa left, heading towards Madyan, having not met an affliction before that, and he had no knowledge of the road except his good opinion of his Lord the Exalted, for he said: 'Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the sound way' (Al-Qasas). When he arrived at the water of Madyan, he found upon it a group of people watering, and he found apart from them two women holding back (Al-Qasas), meaning keeping their sheep back. He said to them: 'What is your affair, standing apart and not watering with the people?' They said: 'We have no strength to crowd with the people, and we are only waiting for the surplus of their troughs.' He watered for them, and he began to scoop much water into the bucket until he was the first of the shepherds to finish. They returned with their sheep to their father, and Musa returned and sought shade under a tree and said: 'My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You send down to me, in need' (Al-Qasas). Their father disapproved of their quick return with their sheep, full and satisfied. He said: 'You have an affair today.' They told him what Musa had done. He ordered one of them to call him for him. She came to Musa and called him. When he spoke to him, he said: 'Do not fear; you have escaped from the wrongdoing people' (Al-Qasas). 'Pharaoh and his people have no authority over us, and we are not in his kingdom.' One of them said: 'O my father, hire him; indeed, the best you can hire is the strong, the trustworthy' (Al-Qasas). Jealousy moved him to say: 'And what makes you know his strength and his trustworthiness?' She said: 'As for his strength, what I saw of him at the bucket when he watered for us, I have not seen a man stronger in that watering than him. And as for his trustworthiness, he looked at me when I came to him, and I appeared to him. When he knew that I was a woman, he lowered his head and did not raise it, and did not look at me until I delivered your message. Then he said: "Walk behind me and describe the road to me." He did not do this matter except that he is trustworthy.' Her father was relieved, and he believed her and thought of him what she said. He said to him: 'I wish to marry you one of these two daughters of mine, on the condition that you serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it is from you. And I do not want to make it difficult for you; you will find me, if Allah wills, from the righteous' (Al-Qasas). He did so, and it was eight years obligatory upon the Prophet of Allah Musa (peace be upon him), and two years were a count from him. Allah fulfilled his count for him, so he completed ten. Sa'id said: A man from the people of Christianity, one of their scholars, met me and said: 'Do you know which of the two terms Musa fulfilled?' I said: 'No,' and I did not know at that time. I met Ibn Abbas and mentioned that to him. He said: 'Do you not know that eight were obligatory upon Musa, and the Prophet of Allah would not have been one to decrease anything from it, and he knew that Allah would fulfill for Musa the count He promised? He fulfilled ten years.' I met the Christian and told him that. He said: 'The one you asked and told you is more knowledgeable than you regarding that.' I said: 'Yes, and more worthy.' When Musa traveled with his family, the matter of the fire, the staff, and his hand was what Allah related to you in the Quran. He complained to his Lord the Blessed and Exalted about what he feared from the family of Pharaoh regarding the killing, and the knot in his tongue, for there was a knot in his tongue that prevented him from much speech. He asked his Lord to assist him with his brother Harun, to be for him a support and to speak for him regarding much of what his tongue could not articulate clearly. Allah granted him his request and loosened the knot from his tongue. Allah revealed to Harun and commanded him to meet him. Musa set out with his staff until he met Harun, and they both went to Pharaoh. They stayed at his door for a while, not being granted permission, then they were granted permission after a severe barrier. They said: 'Indeed, we are the messengers of your Lord' (Ta-Ha). He said: 'And who is your Lord, O Musa?' (Ta-Ha). He told him what Allah related to you in the Quran. He said: 'And what do you want?' and he mentioned the killed man. He apologized with what you have heard and said: 'I want you to believe in Allah and send with me the Children of Israel.' He refused that and said: 'Bring a sign if you are of the truthful.' He cast his staff, and it was a great serpent, opening its mouth, rushing towards Pharaoh. When Pharaoh saw it heading towards him, he feared it, so he jumped from his throne and sought help from Musa to stop it from him, and he did. Then he took his hand out of his pocket, and he saw it white without evil, meaning without leprosy. Then he returned it, and it returned to its first color. He consulted the chiefs around him regarding what he saw. They said to him: 'These two are magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and take away your exemplary way' (Ta-Ha), meaning their kingdom that they were in and the life. They refused to give him anything of what he asked and said to him: 'Gather for us the magicians, for they are many in your land, until their magic overcomes their magic.' He sent into the city, and every learned magician was gathered for him. When they came to Pharaoh, they said: 'With what does this magician work?' They said: 'He works with snakes.' They said: 'No, by Allah, there is no one on earth who works magic with snakes and staffs like we do. What is our reward if we overcome?' He said to them: 'You are my relatives and my close ones, so I will do for you everything you love.' They appointed the Day of Adornment and that the people be gathered in the morning (Ta-Ha). Sa'id said: Ibn Abbas told me that the Day of Adornment is the day on which Allah made Musa victorious over Pharaoh and the magicians, and it is the day of Ashura. When they gathered on the plain, the people said to each other: 'Come, let us attend this matter, perhaps we will follow the magicians if they are the ones who overcome' (Ash-Shu'ara), meaning Musa and Harun, mocking them. They said: 'O Musa, because of their power with their magic, either you cast, or we will be the ones who cast' (Al-A'raf). He said: 'Rather, you cast.' They cast their ropes and staffs and said: 'By the might of Pharaoh, indeed we are the ones who will overcome' (Ash-Shu'ara). Musa saw of their magic what he felt in his heart as fear. Allah the Blessed and Exalted revealed to him: 'Cast your staff' (Al-A'raf). When he cast it, it became a great serpent, opening its mouth, and the staffs, by the call of Musa, began to be entangled with the ropes until it caught a mass into the serpent, entering into it, until it left no staff or rope except that it swallowed it. When the magicians knew that, they said: 'If this were magic, it would not have reached this extent of our magic, but it is a matter from the command of Allah the Blessed and Exalted. We believe in Allah and in what Musa brought, and we repent to Allah the Exalted from what we were upon.' Allah broke the back of Pharaoh in that place and his followers, and He manifested the truth and invalidated what they were doing. They were overcome there and returned humiliated (Al-A'raf). Pharaoh's wife was standing out, disheveled, praying to Allah for victory for Musa over Pharaoh. Whoever saw her from the family of Pharaoh thought that she was disheveled out of compassion for Pharaoh and his followers, while her sadness and worry were for Musa. When Musa's stay for Pharaoh's false promises lasted—every time he brought him a sign, he promised him at it that he would send the Children of Israel, and when it passed, he broke his promises and said: 'Can your Lord do other than this?'—Allah sent upon him and his people the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the blood as distinct signs. All of that, he complained to Musa and requested him to stop it from him and agreed to send the Children of Israel with him. When it was stopped from him, he broke his promise and violated his covenant, until he commanded the departure with his people. He left with them at night. When morning came for Pharaoh and he saw that they had gone, he sent into the cities gatherers, following them with great, numerous armies. Allah revealed to the sea: 'When My servant Musa strikes you with his staff, split into twelve parts until Musa and those with him pass, then close upon those who remain after him from Pharaoh and his followers.' Musa forgot to strike the sea with the staff, so he arrived at the sea, and it had a roaring sound for fear that Musa would strike it with his staff while he was heedless, and it would become disobedient. When the two hosts saw each other and drew near, the people of Musa said: 'Indeed, we are overtaken' (Ash-Shu'ara). 'Do what your Lord commanded you, for you will not be lied to and you will not lie.' He said: 'He promised me when I came to the sea that He would split for me twelve parts until I crossed it.' Then he remembered the staff after that, and he struck the sea with his staff. It split for him when the first of Pharaoh's army drew near to the last of Musa's army. The sea split as his Lord commanded him and as He promised Musa. When Musa and all his companions crossed, and Pharaoh and his companions entered, it closed upon them as Allah commanded. When Musa crossed the sea, they said: 'We fear that Pharaoh has not drowned, so we do not believe in his destruction.' He called upon his Lord, and He brought him out for him with his body until they were certain of his destruction. Then they passed by a people who were devoted to idols of theirs. They said: 'O Musa, make for us a god as they have gods.' He said: 'Indeed, you are a people who are ignorant. Indeed, these are destroyed in what they are in, and invalid is what they were doing' (Al-A'raf). You have seen of the lessons and heard what is sufficient for you. He went on and settled them in a place, then said to them: 'Obey Harun, for I have appointed him as my successor over you, and I am going to my Lord.' He appointed for them thirty days to return to them. When he came to his Lord, he wanted to speak to Him in thirty, and he had fasted them, their nights and their days. He disliked to speak to his Lord while the odor of the mouth of the fasting person was coming from his mouth. Musa took something from the vegetation of the earth and chewed it. His Lord said to him when he came: 'You have broken your fast,' and He is more knowing of what was. He said: 'My Lord, I disliked to speak to You except that my mouth was of good odor.' He said: 'Do you not know, O Musa, that the odor of the mouth of the fasting person is better to Me than the scent of musk? Return until you fast ten, then come to me.' Musa did what he was commanded. When Musa's people saw that he did not return to them by the term, it saddened them. Harun had addressed them and said: 'You left Egypt, and the people of Pharaoh have borrowed goods and deposits, and you have the like of that with them. I see that you should consider what you have with them as a loss, and I do not make lawful for you a deposit or a loan, and we are not returning anything of that to them, nor keeping it for ourselves.' He dug a pit and commanded every people who had something of that, of goods or ornaments, to throw it into that pit. Then he ignited fire upon it and burned it and said: 'It shall not be for us nor for them.' The Samiri was a man from a people who worshipped cows, neighbors of theirs, and he was not from the Children of Israel. He traveled with Musa and the Children of Israel when they traveled. It was destined for him that he saw a trace, so he took a handful from it. He passed by Harun, and Harun said to him: 'O Samiri, will you not cast what is in your hand?' He was holding it, and no one saw it throughout that time. He said: 'This is a handful from the trace of the Messenger who crossed the sea with you, so I will not cast it for anything unless you call upon Allah when I cast it, that it be what I want.' He cast it, and Harun called upon Him for him and said: 'I want it to be a calf.' What was in the pit of goods, ornaments, copper, or iron gathered, and it became a hollow calf, having no soul, having a lowing sound. Ibn Abbas said: 'No, by Allah, it never had a voice at all. The wind would only enter from its rear and exit from its mouth, and that sound was from that.' The Children of Israel split into groups. One group said: 'O Samiri, what is this? For you are more knowing of it.' He said: 'This is your god, but Musa lost the way.' One group said: 'We will not deny this until Musa returns to us. If it is our god, we have not wasted it and been incapable regarding it when we saw it, and if it is not our god, we will follow the word of Musa.' One group said: 'This is the work of Satan, and it is not our god, and we do not believe in it nor do we confirm it.' A group had the confirmation of what the Samiri said regarding the calf absorbed into their hearts, and they announced the denial of it. Harun said to them: 'O my people, you are only being tried by it, and indeed your Lord is the Most Merciful' (Ta-Ha), it is not like this. They said: 'What is the matter with Musa? He promised us thirty days, then he broke his promise to us. These are forty that have passed.' Their foolish ones said: 'His Lord made a mistake, so he is seeking Him and following Him.' When Allah spoke to Musa and said to him what He said, He informed him of what his people encountered after him. Musa returned to his people, angry and sorrowful (Al-A'raf). He said to them what you heard in the Quran, and he took his brother by the head, dragging him to him, and cast the tablets. Then he excused his brother and asked forgiveness for him, and turned to the Samiri and said to him: 'What led you to what you did?' He said: 'I took a handful from the trace of the Messenger, and I perceived it, and it was hidden from you, so I cast it, and thus my soul prompted me.' He said: 'Go, for indeed it is for you in life to say: "No contact." And indeed you have an appointment you will not fail. And look at your god to which you remained devoted; we will surely burn it, then we will surely scatter it in the sea with a scattering' (Ta-Ha). If it were a god, that would not have reached it. The Children of Israel became certain, and those whose opinion regarding it was like the opinion of Harun rejoiced. Their group said to Musa: 'Ask our Lord for us to open for us a door of repentance that we may perform, so that it may expiate what we have done.' He chose from his people seventy men for that, to come to the mountain, from those who did not associate in the calf. He went with them to ask for repentance for them. The earth shook with them. The Prophet of Allah felt shy before his people and his delegation when He did to them what He did. He said: 'My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before, and me. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done?' (Al-A'raf). Among them were those whom Allah had let know what was absorbed of the love of the calf as belief in it, and for that, the earth shook with them. He said: 'My mercy encompasses all things, so I will write it for those who fear and give Zakat, and those who believe in Our signs, those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Gospel.' He said: 'My Lord, I asked You for repentance for my people, and You said that Your mercy You wrote it for a people other than my people. I wish You had delayed me until You brought me out alive in the nation of that man, the blessed.' Allah the Blessed and Exalted said to him: 'Indeed, their repentance is that every man among them kills everyone he meets of father and son, and he kills him with the sword, not caring whom he kills in that place.' Those whom Musa and Harun were hidden from, what Allah let them know of their sins, came and confessed them and did what they were commanded, so Allah forgave the killer and the killed. Then Musa traveled with them, heading towards the Holy Land, and he took the tablets after his anger subsided. He commanded them with what he was commanded to convey to them of the duties. That was heavy upon them, and they refused to acknowledge it. Allah raised the mountain over them as if it were a canopy, and it drew near to them until they feared it would fall upon them. They took the Book with their right hands, and they were listening to the mountain and the earth, and the Book was in their hands, and they were looking at the mountain for fear that it would fall upon them. Then they went on until they came to the Holy Land, and they found in it a city in which were a people, giants, their creation was a strange creation. They mentioned of their fruits a wondrous matter of their greatness. They said: 'O Musa, indeed in it are a people, giants' (Al-Ma'idah). 'We have no power over them, and we will not enter it as long as they are in it. If they leave it, then we are entering' (Al-Ma'idah). Two men from those who fear (Al-Ma'idah) from the giants believed in Musa, and they went out to them and said: 'We are more knowing of our people. If you only fear what you see of their bodies and their equipment, indeed they have no hearts and no protection. Enter upon them the door, and when you enter it, indeed you are the ones who will overcome.' People say that they are from the people of Musa, and it is claimed from Sa'id bin Jubayr that they are from the giants who believed in Musa. He says: 'From those who fear,' he only meant by that those whom the Children of Israel fear. 'They said: "O Musa, indeed we will never enter it as long as they are in it, so go you and your Lord and fight; indeed we are sitting here"' (Al-Ma'idah). They angered Musa, so he called upon them and named them 'the disobedient.' He did not call upon them before that when he saw from them of disobedience and their evil-doing until that day. Allah answered him, so He named them as Musa named them, 'the disobedient.' He forbade it to them for forty years, wandering in the earth, waking up every day and traveling, having no place to settle. Then the clouds shaded them in the wandering, and He sent down upon them manna and quails, and He made for them garments that did not wear out and did not get dirty. He placed among them a square stone, and Musa was commanded, so he struck it with his staff, and twelve springs burst from it, in every side three springs. He informed every tribe of their spring from which they drink. They would not depart from a stopping place except that they found that stone with them in the place where it was yesterday. Ibn Abbas raised this hadith to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and what confirms that to me is that Mu'awiyah heard Ibn Abbas narrate this hadith, and he denied it to him, that this Pharaohite was the one who disclosed to Musa the matter of the killed man whom he killed. He said: 'How would he disclose it upon him, and he did not know of it, and it was not revealed except to the Israelite who attended that and witnessed it?' Ibn Abbas became angry and took Mu'awiyah by the hand and went with him to Sa'd bin Malik al-Zuhri and said: 'O Abu Ishaq, do you remember the day the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told us about the killed man of Musa, whom he killed from the family of Pharaoh? Did the Israelite disclose it upon him, or the Pharaohite?' He said: 'The Pharaohite only disclosed it upon him by what he heard from the Israelite who witnessed that and attended it.'
حدثنا أبو خيثمة حدثنا يزيد بن هارون حدثنا أصبغ بن زيد الجهني حدثنا القاسم بن أبي أيوب حدثنا سعيد بن جبير عن بن عباس * في قول الله تعالى @QB@ وفتناك فتونا @QE@ طه سألته عن الفتون ما هو قال استأنف النهار يا بن جبير فإن لها حديثا طويلا فلما أصبحت غدوت إلى بن عباس لأنتجز منه ما وعدني من حديث الفتون فقال تذاكر فرعون وجلساؤه ما كان الله وعد إبراهيم من أن يجعل في ذريته أنبياء وملوكا فقال بعضهم ان بني إسرائيل لينتظرون ذلك ما يشكون فيه وقد كانوا يظنون أنه يوسف بن يعقوب فلما هلك قالوا ليس كذلك ان الله عز وجل وعد إبراهيم قال فرعون فكيف ترونه فائتمروا وأجمعوا أمرهم على أن يبعث رجالا معهم الشفار يطوفون في بني إسرائيل فلا يجدون مولودا ذكرا إلا ذبحوه ففعلوا ذلك فلما رأوا أن الكبار من بني إسرائيل يموتون بآجالهم والصغار يذبحون قالوا يوشك أن تفنوا بني إسرائيل فتصيرون إلى أن تباشروا من الأعمال التي كانوا يكفونكم فاقتلوا عاما كل مولود ذكر فيقل نباتهم ودعوا عاما فلا يقتل منهم أحد فينشأ الصغار مكان من يموت من الكبار فإنهم لن يكثروا بمن تستحيون منهم فتخافوا مكاثرتهم إياكم ولن يفنوا بمن تقتلون فتحتاجون إلى ذلك فأجمعوا أمرهم على ذلك فحملت أم موسى بهارون في العام الذي لا يذبح فيه الغلمان فولدته علانية آمنة فلما كان من قابل حملت بموسى فوقع في قلبها الهم والحزن وذلك من الفتون يا بن جبير ما دخل منه في قلب أمه مما يراد به فأوحى الله تبارك وتعالى إليها أن لا تخافي ولا تحزني إنا رادوه إليك وجاعلوه من المرسلين القصص وأمرها إذا ولدت أن تجعله في تابوت ثم تلقيه في اليم فلما ولدت فعلت ذلك به فلما توارى عنها ابنها أتاها الشيطان فقالت في نفسها ما صنعت بابن لو ذبح عندي فواريته وكفنته كان أحب إلي من أن ألقيه بيدي إلى زفرات البحر وحيتانه فانتهى الماء به حتى انتهى به فرضة مستقى جواري امرأة فرعون فلما رأينه أخذنه فهممن أن يفتحن التابوت فقال بعضهن إن في هذا مالا وإنا إن فتحناه لم تصدقنا امرأة الملك بما وجدنا فيه فحملنه بهيئته لم يحركن منها شيئا حتى دفعنه إليها فلما فتحته رأت فيه غلاما فألقي عليه منها محبة لم تجد مثلها على أحد من البشر قط فأصبح فؤاد أم موسى فارغا من ذكر كل شيء إلا من ذكر موسى فلما سمع الذباحون بأمره أقبلوا بشفارهم إلى امرأة فرعون ليذبحوه وذلك من الفتون يا بن جبير فقالت لهم اتركوه فإن هذا الواحد لا يزيد في بني إسرائيل حتى آتي فرعون فاستوهبه منه فإن وهبه لي كنتم قد أحسنتم وأجملتم وان أمر بذبحه لم ألمكم فأتت به فرعون فقالت قره عين لي ولك قال فرعون يكون لك فأما لي فلا حاجة لي في ذلك قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم والذي أحلف به لو أقر فرعون بأن يكون له قرة عين كما أقرت امرأته لهداه الله به كما هدى امرأته ولكن حرمه ذلك فأرسلت إلى من حولها من كل امرأة لها لبن لتختار له ظئرا فجعل كلما أخذته امرأة منهن لترضعه لم يقبل ثديها حتى أشفقت عليه امرأة فرعون أن يمتنع من اللبن فيموت فأحزنها ذلك فأخرج إلى السوق ومجمع الناس ترجو أن تجد له ظئرا يأخذ منها فلم يقبل فأصبحت أم موسى والهة فقالت لأخته قصيه قصي أثره واطلبيه هل تسمعين له ذكرا أحي ابني أم قد أكلته الدواب ونسيت ما كان الله وعدها فيه فبصرت به أخته عن جنب وهم لا يشعرون والجنب أن يسمو بصر الإنسان إلى الشيء البعيد وهو إلى جنبه لا يشعر به فقالت من الفرح حين أعياهم الظؤار أنا أدلكم على أهل بيت يكفلونه لكم وهم له ناصحون فأخذوها فقالوا ما يدريك ما نصحهم له هل تعرفونه حتى شكوا في ذلك وذلك من الفتون يا بن جبير فقالت نصيحتهم له وشفقتهم عليه رغبة في صهر الملك ورجاء منفعته فأرسلوها فانطلقت إلى أمها فأخبرتها الخبر فجاءت أمه فلما وضعته في حجرها نزا إلى ثديها فمصه حتى امتلأ جنباه ريا وانطلق البشير إلى امرأة فرعون يبشرها أن قد وجدنا لابنك ظئرا فأرسلت إليها فأتيت بها وبه فلما رأت ما يصنع بها قالت لها امكثي عندي ترضعين ابني هذا فإني لم أحب حبه شيئا قط فقالت أم موسى لا أستطيع أن أدع بيتي وولدي فنضيع فإن طابت نفسك أن تعطينيه فأذهب به إلى بيتي فيكون معي لا آلوه خيرا وإلا فإني غير تاركه بيتي وولدي وذكرت أم موسى ما كان الله عز وجل وعدها فتعاسرت على امرأة فرعون وأيقنت أن الله منجز وعده فرجعت إلى بيتها بابنها فأصبح أهل القرية مجتمعين يمتنعون من السخرة والظلم ما كان فيهم قال فلما ترعرع قالت امرأة فرعون لأم موسى أريد أن تريني ابني فوعدتها يوما تريها إياه فقالت امرأة فرعون لخزانها وقهارمتها وظؤورتها لا يبقين أحد منكم إلا استقبل ابني اليوم بهدية وكرامة لأرى ذلك فيه وأنا باعثة أمينا يحصي كل ما يصنع كل إنسان منكم فلم تزل الهدايا والكرامة والنحل تستقبله من حين خرج من بيت أمه إلى أن أدخل على امرأة فرعون فلما دخل عليها بجلته وأكرمته وفرحت به وأعجبها وبجلت أمه بحسن أثرها عليه ثم قالت لآتين به فرعون فليبجلنه وليكرمنه فلما دخلت به عليه جعلته في حجره فتناول موسى لحية فرعون فمدها إلى الأرض فقال الغواة أعداء الله لفرعون ألا ترى إلى ما وعد الله إبراهيم نبيه أنه يربك ويعلوك ويصرعك فأرسل إلى الذباحين ليذبحوه وذلك من الفتون يا بن جبير بعد كل بلاء ابتلي وأربك به فتونا فجاءت امرأة فرعون تسعى إلى فرعون فقالت ما بدا لك في هذا الغلام الذي وهبته لي قال ترينه يزعم أنه يصرعني ويعلوني قالت اجعل بيني وبينك أمرا تعرف الحق فيه ائت بجمرتين ولؤلؤتين فقربهن إليه فإن بطش باللؤلؤتين واجتنب الجمرتين عرفت أنه يعقل وان تناول الجمرتين ولم يرد اللؤلؤتين علمت أن أحدا لا يؤثر الجمرتين على اللؤلؤتين وهو يعقل فقرب ذلك فتناول الجمرتين فانتزعوهما من يده مخافة أن تحرقاه فقالت المرأة ألا تري فصرفه الله عنه بعد ما كان قد هم به وكان الله عز وجل بالغا فيه أمره فلما بلغ أشده وكان من الرجال لم يكن أحد من آل فرعون يخلص إلى أحد من بني إسرائيل معه بظلم ولا سخرة حتى امتنعوا كل الامتناع فبينما موسى في ناحية المدينة إذا هو برجلين يقتتلان أحدهما فرعوني والآخر إسرائيلي فاستغاثه الإسرائيلي على الفرعوني فغضب موسى غضبا شديدا لأنه تناوله وهو يعلم منزلة موسى من بني إسرائيل وحفظه لهم لا يعلم الناس أنما ذلك من الرضاع إلا أم موسى إلا أن يكون الله أطلع موسى من ذلك على ما لم يطلع عليه غيره فوكز موسى الفرعوني فقتله وليس يراهما أحد إلا الله والإسرائيلي فقال موسى حين قتل الرجل هذا من عمل الشيطان إنه عدو مضل مبين قصص ثم قال رب إني ظلمت نفسي فاغفر لي فغفر له إنه هو الغفور الرحيم وأصبح في المدينة خائفا يترقب الأخبار فأتي فرعون فقيل له إن بني إسرائيل قتلوا رجلا من آل فرعون فخذ لنا حقنا ولا ترخص لهم فقال ابغوني قاتله ومن يشهد عليه فإن الملك وإن كان صفوه مع قوم لا يستقيم له أن يقيد بغير بينة ولا ثبت فاطلبوا لي علم ذلك آخذ لكم بحقكم فبينما هم يطوفون لا يجدون ثبتا إذا موسى قد رأى من الغد ذلك الإسرائيلي يقاتل رجلا من آل فرعون آخر فاستغاثه الإسرائيلي على الفرعوني فصادف موسى قد ندم على ما كان منه فكره الذي رأى لغضب الإسرائيلي وهو يريد أن يبطش بالفرعوني فقال للإسرائيلي لما فعل أمس واليوم إنك لغوي مبين قصص فنظر الإسرائيلي إلى موسى حين قال له ما قال فإذا هو غضبان كغضبه بالأمس فخاف أن يكون إياه أراد وما أراد الفرعوني ولم يكن أراده إنما أراد الفرعوني فخاف الإسرائيلي فحاجز الفرعوني وقال با موسى أتريد أن تقتلني كما قتلت نفسا بالأمس قصص وإنما قال ذلك مخافة أن يكون إياه أراد موسى ليقتله وتنازعا وتطاوعا وأنطلق الفرعوني إلى قومه فأخبرهم بما سمع من الإسرائيلي من الخبر حين يقول أتريد أن تقتلني كما قتلت نفسا بالأمس فأرسل فرعون الذباحين ليقتلوا موسى فأخذ رسل فرعون الطريق الأعظم يمشون على هيئتهم يطلبون لموسى وهم لا يخافون أن يفوتهم إذ جاء رجل من شيعة موسى من أقصى المدينة فاختصر طريقا قريبا حتى يسبقهم إلى موسى فأخبره الخبر وذلك من الفتون يا بن جبير فخرج موسى متوجها نحو مدين لم يلق بلاء قبل ذلك وليس له بالطريق علم إلا حسن ظنه بربه عز وجل فإنه قال عسى ربي أن يهديني سواء السبيل ولما ورد ماء مدين وجد عليه أمة من الناس يسقون ووجد من دونهم امرأتين تذودان القصص يعني بذلك حابستين غنمهما فقال لهما ما خطبكما معتزلتين لا تسقيان مع الناس قالتا ليس لنا قوة نزاحم القوم وإنما ننتظر فضول حياضهم فسقى لهما فجعل يغرف في الدلو ماء كثيرا حتى كان أول الرعاء فراغا فانصرفتا بغنمهما إلى أبيهما وإنصرف موسى فإستظل بشجرة فقال رب إني لما أنزلت إلي من خير فقير قصص فاستنكر أبوهما سرعة صدورهما بغنمهما حفلا بطانا فقال إن لكما اليوم لشأنا فأخبرتاه بما صنع موسى فأمر إحداهما تدعوه له فأتت موسى فدعته فلما كلمة قال لاتخف نجوت من القوم الظالمين قصص ليس لفرعون ولا لقومه علينا سلطان ولسنا في مملكته قال قالت إحداهما يا أبت استأجره إن خير من استأجرت القوي الأمين قصص فاحتملته الغيرة على أن قال وما يدريك ما قوته وما أمانته قالت أما قوته فما رأيت منه في الدلو حين سقى لنا لم أر رجلا أقوى في ذلك السقي منه وأما أمانته فإنه نظر إلي حين أقبلت إليه وشخصت له فلما علم أني امرأة صوب رأسه ولم يرفعه ولم ينظر إلي حتى بلغته رسالتك ثم قال إمشي خلفي وانعتي لي الطريق فلم يفعل هذا الأمر إلا وهو أمين فسري عن أبيها فصدقها وظن به الذي قالت فقال له هل لك أن أنكحك إحدى ابنتي هاتين على أن تأجرني ثماني حجج فإن أتممت عشرا فمن عندك وما أريد أن أشق عليك ستجدني إن شاء الله من الصالحين قصص ففعل فكانت على نبي الله موسى صلى الله عليه وسلم ثمان سنين واجبة وكانت سنتان عدة منه فقضى الله عنه عدته فأتمها عشرا قال سعيد فلقيني رجل من أهل النصرانية من علمائهم فقال هل تدري أي الأجلين قضى موسى قلت لا وأنا يومئذ لا أدري فلقيت بن عباس فذكرت ذلك له فقال أما علمت أن ثمانيا كان على موسى واجبة ولم يكن نبي الله لينقص منها شيئا ويعلم أن الله قاض عن موسى عدته التي وعد فإنه قضى عشر سنين فلقيت النصراني فأخبرته ذلك فقال الذي سألته فأخبرك أعلم منك بذلك قال قلت أجل وأولى فلما سار موسى بأهله كان من أمر النار والعصا ويده ما قص الله عليك في القرآن فشكا إلى ربه تبارك وتعالى ما يتخوف من آل فرعون في القتل وعقد لسانه فإنه كان في لسانه عقدة تمنعه من كثير من الكلام وسأل ربه أن يعينه بأخيه هارون يكون له ردءا ويتكلم عنه بكثير مما لا يفصح به لسانه فآتاه الله سؤله وحل عقدة من لسانه فأوحى الله إلى هارون وأمره أن يلقاه فاندفع موسى بعصاه حتى لقي هارون فانطلقا جميعا إلى فرعون فأقاما على بابه حينا لا يؤذن لهما ثم أذن لهما بعد حجاب شديد فقالا إنا رسولا ربك طه قال فمن ربكما يا موسى طه فأخبره بالذي قص الله عليك في القرآن قال فما تريد وذكره القتيل فاعتذر بما قد سمعت وقال إني أريد أن تؤمن بالله وترسل معي بني إسرائيل فأبى عليه ذلك وقال ائت بآية إن كنت من الصادقين فألقى عصاه فإذا هي حية عظيمة فاغرة فاها مسرعة إلى فرعون فلما رآها فرعون قاصدة إليه خافها فاقتحم عن سريره واستغاث بموسى أن يكفها عنه ففعل ثم أخرج يده من جيبه فرآها بيضاء من غير سوء يعني من غير برص ثم ردها فعادت إلى لونها الأول فاستشار الملأ حوله فيما رأى فقالوا له إن هذان لساحران يريدان أن يخرجاكم من أرضكم بسحرهما ويذهبا بطريقتكم المثلى طه يعني ملكهم الذي هم فيه والعيش فأبوا أن يعطوه شيئا مما طلب وقالوا له اجمع لنا السحرة فإنهم بأرضك كثير حتى يغلب سحرهم سحرهما فأرسل في المدينة فحشر له كل ساحر متعالم فلما أتوا فرعون قالوا بم يعمل هذا الساحر قالوا يعمل بالحيات قالوا فلا والله ما أحد في الأرض يعمل السحر بالحيات والعصي الذي نعمل فما أجرنا ان نحن غلبنا فقال لهم انكم أقاربي وخاصتي فأنا صانع اليكم كل ما أحببتم فتواعدوا يوم الزينة وأن يحشر الناس ضحى طه قال سعيد حدثني بن عباس أن يوم الزينة اليوم الذي أظهر الله فيه موسى على فرعون والسحرة وهو يوم عاشوراء فلما اجتمعوا في صعيد قال الناس بعضهم لبعض انطلقوا فلنحضر هذا الأمر لعلنا نتبع السحرة إن كانوا هم الغالبين الشعراء يعنون موسى وهارون استهزاء بهما فقالوا يا موسى لقدرتهم بسحرهم إما أن تلقي واما أن نكون نحن الملقين الأعراف قال بل ألقوا فألقوا حبالهم وعصيهم وقالوا بعزة فرعون إنا لنحن الغالبون الشعراء فرأى موسى من سحرهم ما أوجس في نفسه خيفة فأوحى الله تبارك وتعالى إليه أن ألق عصاك الأعراف فلما ألقاها صارت ثعبانا عظيما فاغرة فاها فجعلت العصي بدعوة موسى تلبس بالحبال حتى صادت جرزا إلى الثعبان تدخل فيه حتى ما أبقت عصا ولا حبلا إلا ابتلعته فلما عرف السحرة ذلك قالوا لو كان هذا سحرا لم يبلغ من سحرنا هذا ولكنه أمر من أمر الله تبارك وتعالى آمنا بالله وبما جاء به موسى ونتوب إلى الله عز وجل مما كنا عليه وكسر الله ظهر فرعون في ذلك الموطن وأشياعه وأظهر الحق وبطل ما كانوا يعملون فغلبوا هنالك وانقلبوا صاغرين الأعراف وامرأة فرعون بارزة متبذلة تدعو الله بالنصر لموسى على فرعون فمن رآها من آل فرعون ظن أنها ابتذلت للشفقة على فرعون وأشياعه وإنما كان حزنها وهمها لموسى فلما طال مكث موسى لمواعيد فرعون الكاذبة كلما جاءه بآية وعده عندها أن يرسل بني إسرائيل فإذا مضت أخلف مواعيده وقال هل يستطيع ربك أن يصنع غير هذا فأرسل الله عليه وعلى قومه الطوفان والجراد والقمل والضفادع والدم آيات مفصلات كل ذلك يشكو إلى موسى ويطلب إليه أن يكفها عنه ويوافقه أن يرسل معه بني إسرائيل فإذا كف ذلك عنه أخلف موعده ونكث عهده حتى أمر بالخروج بقومه فخرج بهم ليلا فلما أصبح فرعون ورأى أنهم قد مضوا أرسل في المدائن حاشرين يتبعهم بجنود عظيمة كثيرة فأوحى الله إلى البحر أن إذا ضربك عبدي موسى بعصاه فانفرق اثني عشر فرقا حتى يجوز موسى ومن معه ثم التق على من بقي بعده من فرعون وأشياعه فنسي موسى أن يضرب البحر بالعصا فانتهى إلى البحر وله قصيف مخافة أن يضربه موسى بعصاه وهو غافل فيصير عاصيا فلما تراءى الجمعان وتقاربا قال قوم موسى إنا لمدركون الشعراء افعل ما أمرك ربك فإنك لن تكذب ولن تكذب فقال وعدني إذا أتيت البحر أن يفرق لي اثني عشر فرقا حتى أجاوزه ثم ذكر بعد ذلك العصا فضرب البحر بعصاه فانفرق له حين دنا أوائل جند فرعون من أواخر جند موسى فانفرق البحر كما أمره ربه وكما وعد موسى فلما أن جاوز موسى وأصحابه كلهم ودخل فرعون وأصحابه التقى عليهم كما أمر الله فلما أن جاور موسى البحر قالوا إنا نخاف أن لا يكون فرعون غرق فلا نؤمن بهلاكه فدعا ربه فأخرجه له ببدنه حتى استيقنوا بهلاكه ثم مروا على قوم يعكفون على أصنام لهم قالوا يا موسى اجعل لنا إلها كما لهم الهة قال إنكم قوم تجهلون إن هؤلاء متبر ماهم فيه وباطل ما كانوا يعملون الأعراف قد رأيتم من العبر وسمعتم ما يكفيكم ومضى فأنزلهم موسى منزلا ثم قال لهم أطيعوا هارون فإني قد استخلفته عليكم وإني ذاهب إلى ربي وأجلهم ثلاثين يوما أن يرجع إليهم فلما أتى ربه أراد أن يكلمه في ثلاثين وقد صامهن ليلهن ونهارهن كره أن يكلم ربه ويخرج من فمه ريح فم الصائم فتناول موسى شيئا من نبات الأرض فمضغه فقال له ربه حين أتاه أفطرت وهو أعلم بالذي كان قال رب كرهت أن أكلمك إلا وفمي طيب الريح قال أو ما علمت يا موسى أن ريح فم الصائم أطيب عندي من ريح المسك ارجع حتى تصوم عشرا ثم ائتني ففعل موسى ما أمر به فلما رأى قوم موسى أنه لم يرجع إليهم للأجل قال ساءهم ذلك وكان هارون قد خطبهم فقال إنكم خرجتم من مصر ولقوم فرعون عوار وودائع ولكم فيها مثل ذلك وأنا أرى أن تحتسبوا مالكم عندهم ولا أحل لكم وديعة ولا عارية ولسنا برادين إليهم شيئا من ذلك ولا ممسكيه لأنفسنا فحفر حفيرا وأمر كل قوم عندهم شيء من ذلك من متاع أو حلية أن يقذفوه في ذلك الحفير ثم أوقد عليه النار فأحرقه فقال لا يكون لنا ولا لهم وكان السامري رجلا من قوم يعبدون البقر جيران لهم ولم يكن من بني إسرائيل فاحتمل مع موسى وبني إسرائيل حين احتملوا فقضي له أن رأى أثرا فأخذ منه قبضة فمر بهارون فقال له هارون يا سامري ألا تلقي ما في يدك وهو قابض عليه لا يراه أحد طوال ذلك قال هذه قبضة من أثر الرسول الذي جاوز بكم البحر فلا ألقيها بشيء إلا أن تدعو الله إذا ألقيتها أن يكون ما أريد فألقاه فدعا له هارون وقال أريد أن أكون عجلا فاجتمع ما كان في الحفرة من متاع أو حلية أو نحاس أو حديد فصار عجلا أجوف ليس فيه روح له خوار قال بن عباس ولا والله ما كان له صوت قط إنما كانت الريح تدخل من دبره وتخرج من فيه وكان ذلك الصوت من ذلك فتفرق بنو إسرائيل فرقا فقالت فرقة يا سامري ما هذا فأنت أعلم به قال هذا ربكم ولكن موسى أضل الطريق وقالت فرقة لا نكذب بهذا حتى يرجع إلينا موسى فإن كان ربنا لم نكن ضيعناه وعجزنا فيه حين رأيناه وإن لم يكن ربنا فإنا نتبع قول موسى وقالت فرقة هذا عمل الشيطان وليس بربنا ولا نؤمن به ولا نصدق وأشرب فرقة في قلوبهم التصديق بما قال السامري في العجل وأعلنوا التكذيب به فقال لهم هارون ياقوم إنما فتنتم به وإن ربكم الرحمن طه ليس هكذا قالوا فما بال موسى وعدنا ثلاثين يوما ثم أخلفنا هذه أربعون قد مضت فقال سفهاؤهم أخطأ ربه فهو يطلبه ويتبعه فلما كلم الله موسى وقال له ما قال أخبره بما لقي قومه من بعده رجع موسى إلى قومه غضبان أسفا الأعراف فقال لهم ما سمعتم في القرآن وأخذ برأس أخيه يجره إليه وألقى الألواح ثم إنه عذر أخاه واستغفر له وانصرف إلى السامري فقال له ما حملك على ما صنعت قال قبضت قبضة من أثر الرسول وفطنت لها وعميت عليكم فقذفتها وكذلك سولت لي نفسي قال فاذهب فإن لك في الحياة أن تقول لا مساس وإن لك موعدا لن تخلفه وانظر إلى إلهك الذي ظلت عليه عاكفا لنحرقنه ثم لننسفنه في اليم نسفا طه ولو كان إلها لم تخلص إلى ذلك منه فاستيقن بنو إسرائيل وإغتبط الذين كان رأيهم فيه مثل رأي هارون وقالوا جماعتهم لموسى سل لنا ربك أن يفتح لنا باب توبة نصنعها فتكفر ما عملنا فاختار قومه سبعين رجلا لذلك لإتيان الجبل ممن لم يشرك في العجل فانطلق بهم ليسأل لهم التوبة فرجفت بهم الأرض فاستحيا نبي الله من قومه ووفده حين فعل بهم ما فعل فقال رب لو شئت أهلكتهم من قبل وإياي أتهلكنا بما فعل السفهاء منا والأعراف وفيهم من كان الله اطلع على ما أشرب من حب العجل إيمانا به فلذلك رجفت بهم الأرض فقال رحمتي وسعت كل شيء فسأكتبها للذين يتقون ويؤتون الزكاة والذين هم بآياتنا يؤمنون الذين يتبعون الرسول النبي الأمي الذي يجدونه مكتوبا عندهم في التوراة والإنجيل فقال رب سألتك التوبة لقومي فقلت إن رحمتك كتبتها لقوم غير قومي فليتك أخرتني حتى تخرجني حيا في أمة ذلك الرجل المرحومة فقال الله عز وجل له إن توبتهم أن يقتل كل رجل منهم كل من لقي من والد وولد فيقتله بالسيف لا يبالي من قتل في ذلك الموطن ويأتي أولئك الذين خفي على موسى وهارون ما اطلع الله عليه من ذنوبهم واعترفوا بها وفعلوا ما أمروا به فغفر الله للقاتل والمقتول ثم سار بهم موسى متوجها نحو الأرض المقدسة وأخذ الألواح بعد ما سكت عنه الغضب فأمرهم بالذي أمر به أن يبلغهم من الوظائف فثقل ذلك عليهم وأبوا أن يقروا بها فنتق الله عليهم الجبل كأنه ظلة ودنا منهم حتى خافوا أن يقع عليهم فأخذوا الكتاب بأيمانهم وهم مصغون إلى الجبل والأرض والكتاب بأيديهم وهم ينظرون إلى الجبل مخافة أن يقع عليهم ثم مضوا حتى أتوا الإرض المقدسة فوجدوا فيها مدينة فيها قوم جبارون خلقهم خلق منكر وذكروا من ثمارهم أمرا عجيبا من عظمها فقالوا يا موسى إن فيها قوما جبارين المائدة لا طاقة لنا بهم ولا ندخلها ما داموا فيها فإن يخرجوا منها فإنا داخلون المائدة قال رجلان من الذين يخافون المائدة من الجبارين آمنا بموسى فخرجا إليه فقالا نحن أعلم بقومنا إن كنتم إنما تخافون مما ترون من أجسامهم وعدتهم فإنهم لا قلوب لهم ولا منعة عندهم فادخلوا عليهم الباب فإذا دخلتموه فإنكم غالبون ويقول ناس إنهما من قوم موسى وزعم عن سعيد بن جبير أنهما من الجبابرة آمنا بموسى يقول من الذين يخافون إنما عنى بذلك الذين يخافهم بنو إسرائيل @QB@ قالوا يا موسى إنا لن ندخلها أبدا ما داموا فيها فاذهب أنت وربك فقاتلا إنا @QE@ ها هنا قاعدون المائدة فأغضبوا موسى فدعا عليهم وسماهم فاسقين ولم يدع عليهم قبل ذلك لما رأى منهم من المعصية وإساءتهم حتى كان يومئذ فاستجاب الله له فسماهم كما سماهم موسى فاسقين وحرمها عليهم أربعين سنة يتيهون في الأرض يصبحون كل يوم فيسيرون ليس لهم قرار ثم ظلل عليهم الغمام في التيه وأنزل عليهم المن والسلوى وجعل لهم ثيابا لا تبلى ولا تتسخ وجعل بين ظهورهم حجرا مربعا وأمر موسى فضربه بعصاه فانفجرت منه اثنتا عشرة عينا في كل ناحية ثلاثة أعين وأعلم كل سبط عينهم التي يشربون منها لا يرتحلون من منقلة إلا وجد ذلك الحجر فيهم بالمكان الذي كان فيه بالأمس رفع بن عباس هذا الحديث إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وصدق ذلك عندي أن معاوية سمع بن عباس حدث هذا الحديث فأنكره عليه أن يكون الفرعوني هذا الذي أفشى على موسى أمر القتيل الذي قتل قال فكيف يفشي عليه ولم يكن علم به ولاظهر عليه إلا الإسرائيلي الذي حضر ذلك وشهده فغضب بن عباس وأخذ بيد معاوية فذهب به إلى سعد بن مالك الزهري فقال يا أبا إسحاق هل تذكر يوم حدثنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن قتيل موسى الذي قتله من آل فرعون الإسرائيلي أفشى عليه أم الفرعوني فقال إنما أفشى عليه الفرعوني بما سمع من الإسرائيلي الذي شهد ذلك وحضره
