Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Abdullah al-Harawi narrated to us, Ismail ibn Ulayyah narrated to us, al-Hajjaj ibn Abi Uthman narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out to reconcile between the Banu Amr ibn Awf of the Ansar. He said: The prayer time arrived, so Bilal said to Abu Bakr, "Shall I call the adhan so you may lead the people in prayer?" He said, "Yes." So Bilal performed the iqamah, and Abu Bakr stepped forward and led the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) arrived, and they began clapping their hands for Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr would hardly ever turn around when he was in prayer. When they clapped, he turned around and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He stepped back, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) gestured with his hand for him to continue praying. He refused, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stepped forward and prayed. When he finished his prayer, he said to Abu Bakr, "What prevented you from praying?" He said, "It is not for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in prayer." He then turned to the people and said, "What is the matter with this clapping? Clapping in prayer is only for women. If one of you has a need, let him say 'SubhanAllah'."
