Hadith 109:254

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, Rawh narrated to us, Zakariya ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Abu al-Zubayr narrated to us, from Jabir, who said: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq entered, seeking permission to see the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he found people sitting at his door, and permission had not been granted to any of them. He said: So permission was granted to Abu Bakr, and he entered. Then Umar came and sought permission, and permission was granted to him. He found the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sitting, with his wives around him, somber and silent. He (Umar) said: "I will surely say something to make the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) laugh." So he said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you had seen the daughter of Kharijah, she asked me for maintenance, so I stood up to her and struck her neck." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) laughed and said: "They are around me, as you see, asking me for maintenance." Abu Bakr stood up to Aisha to strike her neck, and Umar stood up to Hafsa to strike her neck. Both of them were saying: "Do you ask the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for what he does not have?" They said: "By Allah, we will never ask the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for anything he does not have." Then he withdrew from them for a month, or twenty-nine days. Then this verse was revealed to him: "O Prophet, say to your wives..." until it reached: "...for the doers of good among you a great reward" (Al-Ahzab). He said: So he began with Aisha and said: "O Aisha, I want to present a matter to you, and I do not like for you to hasten in anything until you consult your parents." She said: "What is it, O Messenger of Allah?" He recited the verse to her. She said: "Is it regarding you, O Messenger of Allah, that I should consult my parents? Rather, I choose Allah, His Messenger, and the Home of the Hereafter. And I ask you not to inform any of your wives of what I have said." He said: "No woman among them will ask me but I will inform her. Indeed, Allah did not send me to be harsh, but He sent me as a teacher and one who makes things easy."
