Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 109:85

Al-Qawariri narrated to us, Yazid bin Zuray' narrated to us, Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated to us, from 'Asim bin 'Umar bin Qatadah, from Mahmud bin Labid, from Jabir, who said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), a man came to him with something like an egg made of gold, which he had obtained in one of the military expeditions. He said: He stood by his left side and said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, take this from me as charity, for by Allah, I do not possess any wealth other than it." He turned away from him. Then he came to him from his right side and said the same thing to him, and he turned away from him. Then he came to him from in front of him and said the same thing to him. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "Give it here," while he was angry. He said: When he gave it to him, he threw it at him. Had it hit him, it would have hurt him or wounded him. Then he said: "One of you comes with his wealth—or as he said—possessing nothing else, and gives it as charity, then sits down after that begging from the people. Charity is only from what is left over after sufficiency. Take your wealth back; we have no need for it."
