Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 203:1

Abu al-Rabi’ Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Baghdadi—not al-Zahrani—narrated to us, [saying] Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid narrated to us, from Abu Bakr ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Maryam, from al-Haytham ibn Malik al-Ta’i, from Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘A’idh al-Azdi, from Abu al-Hajjaj al-Thumali, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The grave says to the deceased when he is placed inside it: 'Woe to you, O son of Adam! What has deceived you regarding Me? Do you not know that I am the house of trial and the house of darkness? What has deceived you [when you used to] pass by Me as a *faddad*?'" If he was a righteous person, a responder from the grave answers on his behalf: "Have you seen if he used to enjoin good and forbid evil?" He [the Prophet] said: "The grave then says: 'If that is the case, I will become green for him, his body will become light, and his soul will ascend to the Lord of the Worlds.'" Ibn ‘A’idh said to him: "O Abu al-Hajjaj, what is the *faddad*?" He said: "The one who puts one foot forward and pulls the other back, like your walking, O my nephew, at times." He said: "And he is, on that day, dressed and prepared."
