Khalf ibn Hisham al-Bazzar narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Anas, from Abu Musa—I think he attributed it to the Prophet (ﷺ)—who said: The likeness of the believer who recites the Qur'an is like the citron (utrujjah): its scent is pleasant and its taste is pleasant. The likeness of the believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like the date: it has no scent and its taste is sweet. The likeness of the hypocrite who recites the Qur'an is like the basil (rayhanah): its scent is pleasant and its taste is bitter. The likeness of the hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is like the colocynth (hanthalah): it has no scent and its taste is bitter.
