Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 243:91

On the authority of Abu Musa, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he said: The likeness of the Muslims, the Jews, and the Christians is like a man who hired a people to work for him for a day until nightfall for a known wage. They worked for him until midday, then they said, "We have no need for the wage you stipulated for us, and what we have done is void." He said to them, "Do not do that; work the remainder of your day and take your wage in full." But they refused and abandoned the work. So he hired another people after them and said, "Work the remainder of your day, and you shall have the wage I stipulated for them." They worked until, when it was the time of the Asr prayer, they said, "What we have done is void, and the wage you assigned to us—we have no need for it." He said, "Work the remainder of your work, for there is only a little of the day left, then take your wage." But they refused him. So he hired another people, and they worked for him for the remainder of their day until the sun set, and they received the wage of both groups in full, and the entire wage. That is the likeness of the Jews and the Christians and those who abandoned what Allah commanded them with, and the likeness of the Muslims who accepted the guidance of Allah and what His Messenger brought.
