Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 236:2

'Amr ibn Muhammad al-Naqid narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Abi Mani' al-Rusafi narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Ziyad narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, that 'Ali ibn al-Husayn informed him that al-Miswar ibn Makhramah informed him: That 'Ali proposed to the daughter of Abu Jahl. That reached Fatimah, so she came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said: "The people claim that you do not get angry for your daughters, and this is 'Ali, marrying the daughter of Abu Jahl." Al-Miswar said: I witnessed him when he testified, so he praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "As for what follows: I married my daughter to Abu al-'As, and he spoke to me and was truthful to me. And Fatimah is only a piece of me, and by Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah will never be gathered together under a Muslim man." So 'Ali refrained from the proposal.
