Hadith of 'Amr ibn Hazm (RA)

Hadith 232:1

Al-Hasan ibn ‘Umar ibn Shaqiq ibn Asma’ al-Jarmi narrated to us, [who said] Ja‘far narrated to us, from Hisham, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, who said: When Mu‘awiyah wanted to appoint Yazid as his successor, he sent to the governor of Medina: "Send to me whomever you wish." He said: So ‘Amr ibn Hazm al-Ansari came to him and sought permission [to enter]. Mu‘awiyah’s chamberlain came to seek permission [for him], and he said: "This is ‘Amr who has come seeking permission." He [Mu‘awiyah] said: "What has brought them to me?" He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, he has come seeking your favor." Mu‘awiyah said: "If you are truthful, then let him write whatever he wishes, and give him what he asked of you, but I do not think he [is here for that]." He said: The chamberlain went out to him and said: "What is your need? Write whatever you wish." He said: "Subhan Allah! I come to the door of the Commander of the Faithful and am barred from him? I would like to meet him and speak to him." Mu‘awiyah said to the chamberlain: "Appoint for him such-and-such a day; when he prays the morning prayer, let him come." He said: When Mu‘awiyah prayed the morning prayer, he ordered a couch to be placed in an iwan (hall) of his, then he had the people removed from him, so there was no one with him except a chair placed for ‘Amr. ‘Amr came and sought permission, and he granted him permission. He greeted him, then sat on the chair. Mu‘awiyah said to him: "Your need?" He said: He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "By my life, Yazid ibn Mu‘awiyah has become of central lineage among Quraysh, wealthy in wealth, wealthy in everything except every good. And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'Allah does not entrust a servant with a flock but that He will ask him about it on the Day of Resurrection: how did he act regarding it?' And I remind you of Allah, O Mu‘awiyah, regarding the nation of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), as to whom you appoint as their successor." He said: Mu‘awiyah took a breath and sighed on a cold morning until he sweated, and he began to wipe the sweat from his face three times. Then he recovered, praised Allah and extolled Him, and said: "As for what follows: You are a sincere man who has spoken your opinion, reaching as far as it reached. And there remains nothing but my son and their sons, and my son is more entitled than their sons. Your need?" He said: "I have no need." He said: Then his brother said to him: "We only came from Medina, striking the flanks of our camels, for the sake of these words." He said: "I only came for these words." He said: So he ordered their rewards for them, and he gave ‘Amr the like of it.
