Hadba ibn Khalid and Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj narrated to us, and his copy is from the hadith of Ibrahim, they both said: Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from al-Sha'bi, from al-Dahhak ibn Abi Jubayra, who said: They had nicknames in the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called a man by his nickname. It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, he dislikes it." Then Allah revealed: "And do not insult one another with nicknames," until the end of the verse.
