Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 129:165

Humayd al-Tawil from Anas bin Malik (RA)

Hadith 129:165

Zuhayr narrated to us, Abdullah bin Bakr narrated to us, Humayd narrated to us, from Anas, who said: A son of Abu Talhah fell ill, so he went to the mosque, and the boy passed away. Umm Sulaym prepared her house and made his dinner easy, and she said to her household, "Let none of you mention the death of his son to Abu Talhah." Abu Talhah returned, and with him were people from his companions from the mosque. He said, "How is the boy?" She said, "He is in the best state he has ever been." She presented his dinner, and he and his companions ate. When they left him, she went to what a woman goes to [for her husband]. When it was the end of the night, she said, "Do you not see, O Abu Talhah, that the family of so-and-so borrowed a loan, enjoyed it, and when it was requested back from them, it was difficult for them?" He said, "They were not fair." She said, "Indeed, so-and-so, her son, was a loan from Allah, and He has taken him back." So he said, "To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return." Then he went early to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), who said, "May Allah bless you both in your night." She became pregnant with Abdullah. When she gave birth at night, I disliked to perform the *tahnik* (chewing a date and rubbing it on the palate of the newborn) until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) performed the *tahnik* for him. He said: So I went early with him and some Ajwa dates, and I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) while he was greasing some camels of his and branding them. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Umm Sulaym gave birth tonight, and I disliked to perform the *tahnik* until you perform the *tahnik* for him." He said, "Do you have anything with you?" I said, "Some Ajwa dates." He took some of those dates, chewed them, gathered his saliva, and put it into his mouth, and the boy began to smack his lips. He said, "The love of the Ansar for dates." I said, "Name him, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "He is Abdullah."
