Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 110:132

On the authority of Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed an Umrah, and there was a covenant between him and the people of Makkah that he would not take anyone out from among their people. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) finished his Umrah, he left Makkah. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by the daughter of Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, and she said, "O Messenger of Allah, to whom are you leaving me?" He did not turn to her, due to the covenant that was between him and the people of Makkah. Zayd ibn Harithah passed by her, and she said, "To whom are you leaving me?" He did not turn to her. Then Ja'far passed by her, and she implored him, but he did not turn to her. Then Ali ibn Abi Talib passed by her, and she said, "O Abu al-Hasan, to whom are you leaving me?" So Ali took her and placed her behind Fatimah. When they reached the nearest stopping place, Zayd came to Ali and said, "I am more entitled to her than you; I am the freedman (mawla) of the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ)." Ali said, "I am more entitled to her than you." Ja'far said, "I am more entitled to her than you; her maternal aunt is with me, Asma bint Umays al-Khath'amiyyah." When their voices rose, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent for them. When they came to him, he said, "As for you, O Ja'far, you resemble my creation and my character. As for you, O Ali, I am from you and you are my successor (wasi). And as for Zayd, you are my freedman and the freedman of you all." He said, "Give the girl to her maternal aunt, for she is more entitled to her."
