Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 110:176

Masruq ibn al-Marzuban al-Kufi narrated to us, Ibn Abi Za’idah narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Ishaq, from Sa’id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, he said: The devils had seats where they would listen to the revelation. When they heard the word, they would add nine to it. As for the word, it would be true, and as for what they added, it would be false. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was sent, they were prevented from their seats. They complained about that to Iblis, and the stars were not used to shoot [at them] before that. He said: "This is an event that has occurred on the earth, so disperse throughout the earth." They set out and found the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) between the two mountains of Nakhla, praying. They came to him and informed him, and he said: "This is the event that has occurred on the earth."
