Zuhayr narrated to us, Shababa bin Sawwar narrated to us, Yunus bin Abi Ishaq narrated to us, from al-Minhal bin ‘Amr, from ‘Ali bin ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas, from his father, who said: Al-‘Abbas said to me: "Spend the night with the family of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and memorize the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. And proceed, so do not sleep until you memorize the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." He said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prayed the ‘Isha prayer and left the mosque until no one remained in it except me. He said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, looked at me and said: "Who is this? ‘Abdullah?" I said: "Yes." He said: "What is the matter with you?" I said: "Al-‘Abbas ordered me to spend the night with you tonight." He said: "Then go ahead." He said: "Spread it out, ‘Abdullah." He said: So I brought a pillow made of haircloth, stuffed with palm fiber. He said: Then the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stepped forward and prayed two rak'ahs that were neither long nor short. Then he came to his bed until I heard his snoring or heavy breathing. Then he woke up and recited: "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day..." [Al ‘Imran] until he finished the surah. Then he wiped [his face] three times, then stood up and urinated, then used his siwak, then performed wudu, then stood up and prayed two rak'ahs that were neither long nor short. Then he returned to his bed and slept until I heard his snoring or heavy breathing. Then he woke up and sat upright on his bed and did as he did the first time. Then he wiped [his face] three times and recited the verses from the end of Surah Al ‘Imran: "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day..." until he finished the surah. Then he stood up and used his siwak, then performed wudu, then prayed two rak'ahs that were neither long nor short. Then he returned to his bed and slept until I heard his snoring or heavy breathing. Then he woke up and did as he did the first two times. So he prayed six rak'ahs, then performed witr with three, then prayed the two rak'ahs before the dawn. When he finished his prayer, he said: "O Allah, place light in my sight, and light in my hearing, and light in my heart, and light in front of me, and light behind me, and light above me, and light below me, and light to my right, and light to my left, and grant me light on the Day of Resurrection, and magnify for me light."
