Zuhayr narrated to us, Yazid narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq informed us, from Abu Ja’far and al-Zuhri, from Yazid ibn Hurmuz, who said: Najdah al-Haruri wrote to Ibn Abbas asking him about the share of the kinsfolk (dhu al-qurba), to whom it belongs; and about the killing of children, and he mentioned in his letter that the scholar, the companion of Musa, had killed the boy; and about the women, whether they used to attend war with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and whether a share was allotted to them. Yazid said: I wrote the letter for Ibn Abbas, and he wrote back to him: You wrote asking me about the share of the kinsfolk, to whom it belongs. It is for us, the People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt). Umar ibn al-Khattab had invited us to marry off our unmarried ones from it, to provide service for our dependents from it, and to pay off the debts of our debtors from it, but we refused unless he surrendered it to us, and he refused that, so we left it. You wrote asking me about the killing of children, and you mention that the scholar, the companion of Musa, killed the boy. If you knew about children what that scholar knew, you would kill them, but you do not know, so avoid them, for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) has forbidden their killing. You wrote asking me about the women, whether they used to attend war with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and whether a share was allotted to them. They used to attend with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), but as for a share being allotted to them, no; rather, a gift (radkh) was given to them.
