Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 110:239

Zuhayr narrated to us, Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, Sufyan bin Husayn informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubayd Allah bin Abdullah bin Utbah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I saw a canopy dripping with ghee and honey. People were taking from it; some were taking much, some were taking little, and some were in between. And it was as if a rope was lowered from the sky. I came and took hold of it, and I ascended, and Allah raised you. Then a man came after you and took hold of it and ascended, and Allah raised him. Then a man came after both of you and took hold of it and ascended. Then a man came after all of you and took hold of it, then it was cut for him, then it was joined for him, and he ascended, and Allah raised him." Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, permit me to interpret it." He permitted him. He said: "As for the canopy, it is Islam. As for the ghee and honey, it is the Quran. As for the rope, it is that which you are upon; you ascend, and Allah raises you. Then there will be a man after you upon your path, and he will ascend, and Allah will raise him. Then there will be a man after both of you, and he will take hold as you took hold, and he will ascend, and Allah will raise him. Then there will be a man after all of you upon your path, then it will be cut for him, then it will be joined for him, and he will ascend, and Allah will raise him." He [the Prophet] said: "You have hit the mark, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "You hit the mark and you missed." He said: "I adjure you, O Messenger of Allah, to tell me." He said: "Do not adjure."
