Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 110:42

On the authority of Abu ‘Awanah, from Abu Bishr, from Sa’id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not recite to the Jinn, nor did he see them. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set out with a group of his companions, intending to go to the market of ‘Ukaz, while the devils had been barred from the news of the heaven, and shooting stars had been sent against them. The devils returned to their people, who asked, "What is the matter with you?" They replied, "We have been barred from the news of the heaven, and shooting stars have been sent against us." They said, "This is only because of something that has occurred, so scour the east and west of the earth." The group that had headed toward Tihamah passed by him—and he was at Nakhlah, intending to go to the market of ‘Ukaz—while he was leading his companions in the dawn prayer. When they heard the Qur’an, they listened to it and said, "This is what has barred us from the news of the heaven." They returned to their people and said, "O our people, indeed we have heard an amazing Qur’an, which guides to the right course, so we have believed in it." Then Allah revealed to His Prophet: "Say, 'It has been revealed to me that a group of the Jinn listened...'"
