Hadith 108:113
Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Aban narrated to us, Abd al-Wahhab ibn Abd al-Majid—meaning al-Thaqafi—narrated to us, from Ja’far ibn Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out in the year of the Conquest to Makkah in Ramadan. He fasted until he reached Kura’ al-Ghamim. He said: The people fasted, and they were on foot and riding. It was said to him: "The fasting has become difficult for the people, and they are only waiting to see what you will do." So he called for a cup and raised it to him until the people looked, then he drank. Some of the people broke their fast, and some fasted. It was said to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "Some of them have fasted." He said: "Those are the disobedient ones." The foot soldiers among his companions gathered to him and lined up before him. They said: "We seek the supplications of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and the journey has become intense and the distance long." He said to them: "Seek help through *al-nasl* (a quick, light pace), for it will shorten the land for you and you will become light for it." He said: So we did that, and we became light for it.
