Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 108:51

Abu Bakr narrated to us, Ali bin Mushir narrated to us, from al-Ajlah, from al-Dhayyal bin Harmalah al-Asadi, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said: Quraysh gathered one day for the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said: "Look for the most knowledgeable among you regarding sorcery, soothsaying, and poetry, so that he may come to this man who has divided our group, scattered our affairs, and criticized our religion, and speak to him and see what he replies." They said: "We do not know anyone other than Utbah bin Rabi'ah." They said: "You, O Abu al-Walid." So Utbah came to him and said: "O Muhammad, are you better, or is Abdullah?" The Messenger of Allah remained silent. Then he said: "Are you better, or is Abd al-Muttalib?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, remained silent. He said: "If you claim that these are better than you, then they worshipped the gods that you criticized. And if you claim that you are better than them, then speak so that we may hear your words. By Allah, we have never seen a young goat more ominous to your people than you; you have divided our group, scattered our affairs, and criticized our religion, and you have disgraced us among the Arabs, until it has spread among them that there is a sorcerer in Quraysh and that there is a soothsayer in Quraysh. By Allah, we are waiting for nothing but the likes of the cry of a pregnant woman, that some of us rise against others with swords until we perish. O man, if it is only need that is upon you, we will collect for you until you are the wealthiest man in Quraysh. And if it is marriage that you desire, then choose whichever of the women of Quraysh you wish, and we will marry you to ten." The Messenger of Allah said to him: "Have you finished?" He said: "Yes." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Ha-Mim. A revelation from the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. [Surah] Fussilat," until he reached: "But if they turn away, then say, 'I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of 'Ad and Thamud.'" Utbah said: "Enough, enough! Do you have nothing else?" He said: "No." So he returned to Quraysh, and they said: "What is behind you?" He said: "I did not leave anything that I thought you would speak to him about except that I spoke to him about it." They said: "Did he answer you?" He said: "Yes, by the One who set it up as a sign, I did not understand anything of what he said except that he said: 'I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of 'Ad and Thamud.'" They said: "Woe to you! A man speaks to you in Arabic, and you do not know what he said?" He said: "No, by Allah, I did not understand anything of what he said except the mention of the thunderbolt."
