Ja'far ibn Mihran narrated to us, 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn Qatadah narrated to me, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jabir, from his father, Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, who said: We approached with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, not knowing of the ambush of the people which they had hidden for us. We reached the valley of Hunayn in the darkness of the morning, and it is a hollow valley among the valleys of Tihamah, a steep descent; they were only descending into it. He said: By Allah, while the people were following one another, not knowing of anything, the battalions suddenly came upon them from every direction. The people did not look at one another before they were defeated, turning back. He said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, turned to the right and said: "Where are you going, O people? I am the Messenger of Allah. I am Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah."
