Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 115:96

'Abd al-Wahid ibn Ghiyath and Sa'id ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us—and this is the wording of 'Abd al-Wahid—they both said: Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Anas: That three men set out seeking provisions for their families, and the sky overtook them [with rain]. A rock fell upon them, shifting [to cover the opening of a cave], until they could not see any gap in it. Some of them said: "The rock has fallen, the tracks are erased, and no one knows your location except Allah, so call upon Allah by your most reliable deeds." One man said: "O Allah, You know that I had two parents, and I used to milk for them into their vessel. When I found them asleep, I would stand at their heads until they awoke, whenever they awoke, disliking to return [the milk] to their heads [before them]. O Allah, if You know that I only did that out of hope for Your mercy and fear of Your punishment, then relieve us." He said: So a third of the rock moved. The second said: "O Allah, if You know that a woman pleased me, and I made a substitute for her [to be with her], and when I had power over her and provided for her, I left her and surrendered her soul to You. O Allah, if You know that I only did that out of hope for Your mercy and fear of Your punishment, then relieve us." He said: So two-thirds of the rock moved. The other said: "O Allah, You know that I hired a laborer for work he was to do for me. He came seeking his wage, and I was angry, so I rebuked him. He left and abandoned his wage. I gathered it for him and invested it until it became all that wealth. He came to me seeking his wage, and I gave him all of that. Had I wished, I would not have given him anything except his first wage. O Allah, if You know that I did that out of hope for Your mercy and fear of Your punishment, then relieve us." He said: So the rock moved, and they went out walking.
