Hadith 6:115

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Sa’d ibn Ibrahim, from ‘Amir ibn Sa’d, from his father, who said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to visit him while he was in Mecca, and he disliked dying in the land from which he had emigrated. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "May Allah have mercy on Sa’d ibn ‘Afra’." He had only one daughter. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all of my wealth?" He said: "No." He said: "Then half?" He said: "No." He said: "Then a third?" He said: "A third, and a third is much. Indeed, that you leave your heirs wealthy is better than that you leave them dependent, begging from the hands of others." "And whatever expenditure you spend, it is a charity, even the morsel you lift to the mouth of your wife. And perhaps Allah will grant you provision, so that people will benefit by you, and others will be harmed by you."
