Umar sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and with him were women from the Quraysh who were speaking to him and asking him for more, their voices being loud. When he sought permission, they stood up, hastening to the veil. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gave him permission, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was laughing. Umar said, "May Allah make your teeth laugh, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "I am amazed at these women who were with me; when they heard your voice, they hastened to the veil." Umar said, "You, O Messenger of Allah, were more deserving of them fearing you." Then Umar said, "O enemies of your own selves, do you fear me and not fear the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?" They said, "Yes, you are harsher and more stern than the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the Shaytan has never met you traveling on a path, but that he would travel on a path other than your path."
