Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 6:52

Al-Husayn ibn ‘Amr ibn Muhammad al-‘Anqazi narrated to us, my father narrated to us, Khallad ibn Muslim al-Saffar narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Qays, from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, from Mus‘ab ibn Sa‘d, from his father, regarding the saying of Allah: "Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book. Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an that you might understand. We relate to you the best of stories..." [Yusuf: 1-3]. He said: The Qur’an was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he recited it to them for a time. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would relate stories to us." So Allah revealed: "Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book. Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an..." [Yusuf: 1-2]. He recited it to them for a time, and they said: "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would narrate to us." So Allah revealed: "Allah has sent down the best of statements: a consistent Book..." [Al-Zumar: 23]. In all of that, they were being commanded to [adhere to] the Qur’an. My father said: Khallad said, and someone else added for me in it: They said: "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would remind us." So Allah revealed: "Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth?" [Al-Hadid: 16].
