Hadith 6:84
Zuhayr narrated to us, Isma'il bin 'Umar narrated to us, Yunus bin Abi Ishaq narrated to us, Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Sa'd narrated to us, he said: My father, Muhammad, narrated to me, from his father, Sa'd, who said: I passed by 'Uthman bin 'Affan in the mosque and greeted him, so he filled his eyes with me [looked at me intently], then he did not return the greeting to me. So I went to the Commander of the Believers, 'Umar bin al-Khattab, and said: "O Commander of the Believers, has something happened in Islam?" He said: "And what is that?" I said: "Nothing, except that I passed by 'Uthman just now in the mosque and greeted him, so he filled his eyes with me, then he did not return the greeting to me." 'Umar sent for 'Uthman and called him, and said: "What prevented you from returning the greeting to your brother?" 'Uthman said: "I did not do that." Sa'd said: "I said: 'Yes, you did.'" He said: "Until he swore and I swore." He said: Then 'Uthman remembered and said: "Yes, I seek forgiveness from Allah and I repent to Him. You did pass by me just now while I was speaking to myself about a word I heard from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). By Allah, I have never remembered it but that a veil covered my sight and my heart." Sa'd said: "Then I will inform you of it. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) mentioned to us the first supplication, then a Bedouin came and distracted him. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stood up and I followed him. When I feared that he would reach his house before me, I struck the ground with my foot. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) turned to me and said: 'Who is this? Abu Ishaq?' I said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'What is it?' I said: 'By Allah, nothing, except that you mentioned to us the first supplication, then this Bedouin came.'" He said: "Yes, the supplication of Dhu al-Nun [Jonah]: 'There is no god but You, glory be to You, indeed I have been of the wrongdoers.' For no Muslim has ever supplicated to his Lord with it for anything at all, but that He answered him."
