Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 6:94

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us, Zuhayr narrated to us, Simak ibn Harb narrated to me, from Mus'ab ibn Sa'd, from his father, that verses of the Quran were revealed concerning him. He said: Umm Sa'd swore that she would never speak to him until he disbelieved in his religion, and that she would neither eat nor drink. She said: "You claim that Allah has enjoined upon you [kindness to] your parents, and I am your mother, and I command you to do this." He said: She remained for three days until she fainted from exhaustion. Then a son of hers named 'Umarah stood up and gave her a drink, and she began to invoke [curses] against Sa'd. Then Allah revealed this verse: "And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. But accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) obtained great spoils of war, and among them was a sword. I took it and brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: "Grant me this sword as a gift, for you know my situation." He said: "Return it to where you took it from." So I went back with it, then I returned after that and asked him again. He said: "Return it to where you took it from." I went off, and when I intended to throw it into the pile, my soul blamed me, so I returned to him and said: "Give it to me." He raised his voice at me and said: "Return it to where you took it from." Then Allah revealed: "They ask you about the spoils of war." I sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he came to me. I said: "Let me distribute my wealth as I wish," but he refused. I said: "Then half?" He refused. I said: "Then a third?" He remained silent, and he considered the third to be permissible. He said: I came upon a group of the Ansar and the Muhajirun, and they said: "Come, let us feed you and give you wine to drink," and that was before wine was prohibited. I came to them in a garden—and the garden is the orchard—and there was a roasted head of a camel with them and a skin of wine. He said: I ate and drank with them. He said: I mentioned the Ansar and the Muhajirun and said: "The Muhajirun are better than the Ansar." He said: A man took the jawbone of the head and struck me with it, wounding my nose. I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and informed him, and Allah revealed concerning him—meaning himself—the matter of wine: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan."
