Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 252:30

Sahl ibn Sa‘d said: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have come to gift myself to you." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) looked at her, casting his gaze up and down upon her. When her standing there became prolonged, she stepped aside and sat down. A man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need of her, then marry her to me." He said, "Do you have anything?" He replied, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Go." He went, then returned and said, "I did not find anything." He said, "Go and look, even if it is a ring of iron." He went, then returned and said, "O Messenger of Allah, no, not even a ring of iron. This is my lower garment (izar)," and he had no upper garment (rida) to give her as a dowry. He said, "Your lower garment: if you wear it, there will be nothing of it upon you, and if she wears it, there will be nothing of it upon her." When his sitting became prolonged, he stood up. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) saw him turning away, so he ordered that he be called. He said, "What do you have of the Quran?" He replied, "I have such-and-such surah and such-and-such surah," and he counted the surahs. He said, "Go, for I have given her to you in marriage for what you have of the Quran."
